Hennepin County Medical Center, Minneapolis, MN |
I served as a Washington Health Policy Fellow (WHPF) from 2007-2008 during my final year of residency at the Campbell Clinic. The WHPF program has given me the opportunity to interact with and learn not only from Academy leaders and the staff of the AAOS Washington office, but also with the other young orthopaedic surgeons interested in policy and advocacy. Through these interactions, I have developed a much broader knowledge regarding policy issues that are important to orthopaedic surgeons and our patients. Furthermore, I have had the opportunity to advocate on behalf of the Academy to members of congress on an array of issues including funding for orthopaedic research.
While serving as a WHPF, I have worked on several projects including studying the potential effects of decreasing industry funding and its impact on residency educational resources. Finally, the WHPF has given me the opportunity to work with and develop friendships with other young orthopaedic surgeons who are interested in advocacy and health policy. I am confident that as my career progresses, I will continue working with the other WHPF alumni and members of the Academy leadership and staff in advocating for my profession and patients.
