David Sohn, MD
Assistant Professor University of Toledo Medical Center |
My name is David Sohn, and I am a former attorney-turned-orthopaedic surgeon. I am active in the AAOS both as a member of the Medical Liability Committee as well as the Section Editor of the Health Policy Section of Orthopaedics Knowledge Online. Since serving as a Washington Health Policy Fellow 2008-2009, I remain active in both Research Days Capitol Hill and the National Orthopaedic Leadership Conferences. My policy interests are in medical malpractice reform and risk management advice for the AAOS fellowship, and I write regularly for AAOS Now, the Orthopaedic Risk Manager, and Orthopaedics Today. My true passion, however, is in education.
Physicians today have a largely unrepresented voice in policy because they are not politically active. Part of this is because physicians are busy. Part of this is because physicians are not interested in policy matter (although they should be). But part of this, I believe, is because physicians are not up to speed on current policy issues.
One of my interests is to make health policy education as simple as possible for our membership and for orthopaedic residents, as I believe that education precedes interest an involvement. It is a travesty that 90-95% of trial lawyers (and I am a former attorney) contribute politically, while only 8-9% of physicians do the same. To that end, I am working with other like-minded colleagues to launch a Health Policy Section in Orthopaedics Knowledge Online. This will be an organized library of narrated PowerPoint talks on various health policy issues. This will help AAOS members quickly understand important health policy topics, and can even be used as a residency education curriculum under "Systems Based Learning." I am hopeful that with education, our members will become more active in the Orthopaedic PAC and help physicians find their political voice in these times of change and upheaval.
