Samir Mehta, MD

Assistant Professor
Chief, Orthopaedic Trauma Service

University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine
Philadelphia, PA

I was a Washington Health Policy Fellow from 2002-2003 during my 3rd year of residency at the University of Pennsylvania. I spent a significant amount of time in Washington, DC with the AAOS Washington Office of Government Affairs. I worked with the Orthopaedic Device Forum, the Hip & Knee Registry Governance Team, and the Biological Implants Committee. I was integrally involved with helping to author the AAOS "white paper" statement on the 80-Hour work week and helped launch two surveys of the residents regarding the impact of the 80-Hour Work Week. Furthermore, I helped develop the resident dues structure for the Orthopaedic PAC.

Because of my interest and involvement with the AAOS and the opportunities that I had during my Fellowship, I developed an interest in a variety of topics not traditionally addressed in the orthopaedic community. My research interests have expanded to include graduate medical education, health policy, and ethics. I am also attempting to provide some translational opportunities from basic science or clincial research endeavors into the health policy arena. By raising awareness of these issues, we can begin to address solutions not only within our orthopaedic community but also at the national level.
