POSITION TITLE:
Chief Technology Officer
GENERAL SUMMARY:
The Chief Technology Officer (CTO), a member of the Executive Team, leads the design, development, delivery and financial management of the Academy’s wide-ranging technology resources. In concert with the Executive Team, the CTO supports the Board of Directors and its technology-related committees with business planning to meet the educational, financial, operational, customer and other objectives of the organization and its members.
This position is accountable for the organization-wide strategic direction and management of technology for new and existing products and services to maintain and advance the organization’s competitive position and presence in the medical specialty association community.
The CTO is responsible for overseeing all technical aspects of the organization including e-commerce and works with Executive Management to manage the strategic growth of the organization’s technology resources. Using an active and practical approach, the CTO will direct employees under his/her direction and work collaboratively with department directors to attain the organization’s strategic goals related to technology development and usage by internal and external stakeholders.
The CTO works in a consultative capacity to advise and support colleagues in order to enhance efficiency and effectiveness of technology systems and resources.
POSITION CHALLENGES
• Establish the current and long-range direction of technology aimed at keeping the organization on the forefront of beneficial technology.
• Assist the Board in 1) defining, developing and implementing the organization’s technology vision and 2) developing the overall strategy for developing technical products and services using state of the art techniques and resources.
• Direct long-range planning and development programs to ensure the best use of organizational resources in defining goals, objectives and programs for the achievement of the organization’s strategic plan.
• Enhance the organization’s preeminent position among medical specialty associations in e-commerce; ensure that the organization’s e-commerce activities are beneficial to members and in compliance with regulations governing such activities.
• Deliver significant value and accessibility of technology products and services to meet the needs of members and other stakeholders.
• Provide technical and strategic direction to teams developing and implementing new and/or enhanced technology ideas, concepts, products and services.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
As a member of the Executive Team, participates in the development of strategic plans and policies. Supervises the following departments/units: Information Services and Member & Customer Relations; Online Publications.
Provides direction and leadership on management and operational issues relevant to the Academy and its technology services/functions to ensure uniformity, consistency and efficiency in operations. Ensures appropriate coordination and integration of technology departments, services and activities into the overall goals and objectives of the Academy. Dispenses technical vision, advice, guidance, direction and authorization to carry out major technology plans and procedures.
Ensures the compatibility and integration between external technology systems and the Academy’s internal systems. Promotes the interfacing and control of the organization’s present technology and the dissemination of technological information throughout the organization. Anticipates and plans for future infrastructure capacity needs.
Reviews and finalizes all standard operating procedures for technology services/functions in the organization. Identifies process improvement opportunities with the departments/functions/units delivering technology products and/or services.
Tracks a broad range of emerging technologies to determine their maturity and applicability to the organization. Oversees the study and evaluation of new technology products including the evaluation of their potential and practicality in support of the membership. Serves as senior technical advisor on all innovation and core product technology initiatives and enhancements.
Oversees program development, structures program quality standards, and designs program evaluation approaches that align technology programs with the Academy’s strategic direction and meet requirements as determined by the membership. Compares the direction of the Academy to that of external organizations and competitors’ use of technology to refine plans as needed.
Explores and develops relationships with other associations and strategic business partners to support ongoing and future technology initiatives. Represents AAOS at meetings of associations and other related businesses/organizations as appropriate.
Encourages and enhances communication and collaboration among AAOS departments regarding technology services and product development. Supports efforts to maximize the use of appropriate technology and talent to design, manage and deliver desired products and services to members and staff.
For departments/units/functions reporting to the CTO, oversees operations and performance and ensures fiscal responsibility and budgetary compliance. Reviews and approves all major acquisitions of technology throughout the organization as well as all contracts emanating from technology departments/units reporting to the CTO.
TRAVEL:
Approximately 10%, 25-30 days per year
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: An advanced degree in computer science, engineering science or a related field; certifications and/or evidence of ongoing continuing professional development in related areas.
Work Experience: Minimum of 10 years of relevant strategic business experience managing complex systems and staff structures; a record of progressively responsible senior management positions, preferably in an association, professional services or education environment.
Experience demonstrating increasing responsibility for strategic planning, management and support of information technology services, including direct management of a major IT operation in support of business goals; a strong desire to explore new technology and the ability to ascertain which technology to acquire or adopt to meet defined business needs.
Advanced knowledge of business processes, personnel and workflow management, administration, and resource allocation; strong management skills in business planning, staffing, and people/program evaluation, preferably in a volunteer professional association or other not-for-profit setting; financial management experience at a senior level, with bottom line responsibility.
Proven ability to: 1) integrate new and existing technologies to support organizational and member needs; 2) establish short-term and long-term technology objectives and specify the strategies and actions to achieve them; 3) coordinate and drive business relationships with key internal partners and significant external partners; 4) think strategically and act tactically; 5) manage multiple priorities under pressure; 6) interface internally and externally to ensure successful, high-quality outcomes; and 7) build mutual trust, respect and cooperation among team members across departmental lines.
Strong communications skills, both oral and written; experience as a public speaker with ability to present professionally on behalf of the Academy.
Experience working with Boards of Directors and supporting committee-based decision making processes.
