AAOS Hosts Comparative Effectiveness Symposium in Washington D.C.
By Laura Miller | May 23, 2011
Several orthopedic surgeons, researchers, industry members and government representatives convened last weekend in Washington, D.C., for a symposium hosted by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons to discuss the role of comparative effectiveness research in healthcare, according to an AAOS news release.
The symposium is meant to foster a better connection between providers and policy makers to promote educated decisions regarding orthopedic healthcare. AAOS will join the Orthopaedic Research Society and other stakeholders to increase awareness of the value of CER and encourage the development of superior protocol, according to AAOS President Daniel J. Berry, MD.
AAOS believes that CER has the potential to develop high-quality objective information to improve patient education, shared decision-making and clinical effectiveness of physicians and other healthcare providers' treatment recommendations. Symposium sponsors included the National Institute of Health, National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Skin Diseases, Biomet, DePuy and Zimmer.
