New Code Requests

Proposals for new or revised CPT codes originate in several ways; from committee members on behalf of their specialty society, industry or individual orthopedists. Individuals seeking a new code or a revision to an existing code are encouraged to review the CPT and RUC Processes.

A Code Change Proposal (CCP) form will need to be completed which should include the rationale of the new code request or revision. All code change requests must also be accompanied by a disclosure of financial interest to make transparent any potential conflicts of interest.

Upon completion, the CCP should be forwarded to AAOS staff via fax, mail or email:

The Coding Coverage & Reimbursement Committee will review all code change requests at their next scheduled meeting or conference call. Generally, the committee meets three times a year. Meetings typically take place in March, September and November.

The CPT Editorial Panel also meets three times a year. Their meetings are held in May, October and late January or early February. The deadline for submission of requests to be considered at the Panel Meetings is three months prior to the meeting date. Therefore, one should allow enough time for a full review by the coding committee.
