AFSH Clinical Research Grant
To commemorate its 25th anniversary, the American Foundation for Surgery of the Hand (AFSH) will award a $100,000 grant for a well-designed, prospective, multicenter clinical research study in the field of hand surgery. An eligible consortium must include at least three centers. The trial should begin no later than October 1, 2012, and at least one of the investigators must be a member of the ASSH. Grant proposals of particular interest are prospective randomized studies pertaining to common hand problems such as distal radius fractures, carpal fractures and ligament injuries, arthritis, and flexor tendon repair.

The American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH) Research Committee will review all proposals and select the grant recipient, who will be announced at the 67th annual meeting of the ASSH, Sept. 6–8,2012, in Chicago. AOFAS issues call for abstracts, membership
Abstracts for the 28th American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS) annual meeting, June 20–23, 2012, in San Diego, will be accepted through Jan. 4, 2012, at www.aofas.org/annualmeeting

The AOFAS Resident Scholarship Program, open to PGY2 and PGY3 residents, enables orthopaedic residents to attend the 2012 AOFAS annual meeting. Applications are due March 1, 2012, and more information and application forms can be found on the AOFAS website, www.aofas.orgMembership in the AOFAS is open to orthopaedists in training or practice who have an interest in the advancement of orthopaedic knowledge of foot and ankle care. OREF/CCJR Clinical Practice Award
The Orthopaedic Research Education Foundation (OREF) and Current Concepts in Joint Replacement (CCJR) invite applications for the Spring 2012 OREF/CCJR Clinical Practice Award recognizing completed investigations focusing on healthcare policy, clinical outcomes, or translational research that has immediate clinical impact in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. The primary author will give a presentation at the Current Concepts in Joint Replacement meeting in May, in Las Vegas, and will receive a $2,000 award and travel reimbursement. The application deadline is Jan. 10, 2012.

Register for ORS annual meeting
Advance registration is now open for the 2012 Orthopaedic Research Society (ORS) annual meeting, which will be held Feb. 4–7, 2012, in San Francisco, just prior to the AAOS Annual Meeting. Advance registration may be completed via mail, fax, or online at www.ors.org

OREF partners with AGS
OREF is partnering with the American Geriatrics Society (AGS) to support research by an orthopaedic surgeon investigator. Beginning in 2012, OREF will provide funding for 2 years toward the AGS Jahnigen Career Development Award, a matching award given to a selected recipient of the National Institute on Aging’s Grants for Early Medical/Surgical Subspecialists’ Transition to Aging Research Program (GEMSSTAR).

Scholarships available for OTA resident course
The Orthopaedic Trauma Association’s (OTA) 8th Annual Advanced Trauma Techniques Course for Residents will be held Jan. 13–14, 2012, at the Peabody Orlando in Orlando, Fla. This course is designed for the advanced level orthopaedic resident (PGY 4–5) with basic surgical fracture fixation experience.

Discussions will focus on techniques for patient positioning, surgical exposure, fracture reduction, and application of fixation for extremity fractures. Sessions include the use of videos, photographs, and diagrams to illustrate techniques, as well as hands-on surgical skills sawbone labs and small group case discussions in which typical problematic fracture cases are discussed in detail.
