HVO seeks nominations for Golden Apple Awards
Nominations are now being accepted for the 2008 HVO Golden Apple Awards. The awards recognize the extraordinary contributions of HVO volunteers in support of educational activities at HVO’s training sites.

Up to 10 awards are presented each year; the deadline for nominations is March 1. For more information about previous recipients and to nominate an individual for the 2008 awards, visit the HVO Web site, www.hvousa.org

Gladden Society meets in March and April
The J. Robert Gladden Orthopaedic Society (JRGOS) will hold its annual luncheon on March 6, 2008, at 12:30 p.m. at the San Francisco Marriott, Salon 9. The featured speaker will be JRGOS founding member Charles H. Epps Jr., MD.

The next JRGOS Biennial Meeting will take place April 25–27, 2008, at the JW Marriott Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C. A black tie event honoring JRGOS founding member and incoming AAOS President E. Anthony Rankin, MD, will be held on April 25.

OREF to salute donors, grant recipients
The Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF) has a number of functions scheduled to salute donors and grant recipients. The donor recognition exhibit will be located on the main concourse of the Moscone Convention Center, near the Gateway Ballroom; for members of the Shands Circle, the VIP suite (room 214) will be open Wednesday through Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

ORS schedules award presentations
The Orthopaedic Research Society will recognize those who have made great contributions to the field of orthopaedic research at an awards presentation on March 4, in the Moscone West Convention Center, Rooms 2005/2007/2009/2011, beginning at 4:45 p.m.

Moderators for the session will be Denis R. Clohisy, MD; Roy K. Aaron, MD, and Alan Grodzinsky, ScD. The William Harris Award will be presented to Markus A. Wimmer, PhD; The Marshall R. Urist Award will be preented to Kyriacos A. (Kerry) Athanasiou, PhD, PE; Thomas A. Einhorn, MD, will receive the ORS/AOA Alfred R. Shands Jr., MD, Award and Lecture; the Arthur Steindler Award will be presented to Prof. Dr. Med. Reinhold Ganz, of Zurich, Switzerland.

The Kappa Delta Award papers and the OREF Clinical Award papers will also be presented. Watch for complete coverage in an upcoming issue of AAOS Now.

FOSA plans specialty day
The Federation of Spine Associations (FOSA) Specialty Day, March 8, 2008, in San Francisco, will include a special lunchtime debate on “Three-Level Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion.” This educational event will take place at Moscone West, Rooms 3020-3024.

Registration open for AOA/COA combined meeting
Online registration is now available for the combined meeting of the American Orthopaedic Association (AOA) and the Canadian Orthopaedic Association (COA), June 4–7, 2008, in Quebec City, Canada.

This meeting is open to all orthopaedic surgeons.

AOA~Kellogg Leadership Series
The second module in the AOA~Kellogg Leadership Series will be held April 4–6, 2008. Module 2: Developing Personal Leadership Skills and Competencies puts theory into action with a focus on improving communication skills, leading organizational change, and analyzing, acquiring, and using influence and negotiation skills. The module is designed to help participants become more effective leaders by providing specific skills to achieve success.

AOFAS named to honor roll
The American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS) has been named to the 2008 Associations Advance America Honor Roll, a national awards competition sponsored by the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) and The Center for Association Leadership, Washington, D.C.

The Associations Advance America awards program recognizes associations that propel America forward with innovative projects in education, skills training, standards setting, business and social innovation, knowledge creation, citizenship, and community service.

The AOFAS received the award for its Overseas Outreach Project to Vietnam, which is funded by individual and corporate contributions to the Society’s Outreach & Education Fund.

Hand surgeon fellowship opportunity
The American Foundation for Surgery of the Hand (AFSH) and Health Volunteers Overseas (HVO) are sponsoring the AFSH-HVO Fellowship to provide young hand surgeons with an engaging medical experience in a developing country. During the fellowship, the surgeon will be exposed to a wide range of surgical pathologies.

The deadline for applications is Feb. 29, 2008. The fellowship is open to residents (years R3, R4, R5), fellows, and young hand surgeons within 3 years of completing their fellowship. To learn more, visit the HVO Web site, www.hvousa.org

ASSH seeks abstracts
The American Society for Surgery of the Hand has issued a call for abstracts for its 2008 annual meeting, Sept. 18–20, in Chicago.

Abstracts can be submitted online. The deadline for submitting paper presentation (podium) abstracts is Feb. 25, 2008. Scientific poster abstracts, as well as resident and fellow paper/poster abstracts, are due by March 10, 2008. Video theater abstracts are due by April 14, 2008.

ASSH calls for grant proposals
The ASSH, with the support of the American Foundation for Surgery of the Hand (AFSH), has issued a call for grant proposals for clinical and basic science research grants. Grant funding has been established to encourage young investigators to perform clinical and basic science research studies. It is anticipated that the funding will enable investigators to initiate pilot projects that will lead to subsequent funding from other sources such as the National Institutes of Health. The application deadline is April 14, 2008.

AAHKS issues call for abstracts
The American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS) is now accepting abstracts for its 2008 annual meeting, Nov. 7–9, 2008, at the Hyatt Regency DFW in Dallas. Both knee and hip related topics are welcomed. Please note, your abstract may not be considered if you do not have an AAHKS member listed on the abstract.

The deadline for receipt of abstracts is April 15, 2008. Abstracts may be submitted online at www.aahks.org
