DOJ widens investigation

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), through the U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey, has issued subpoenas to two more orthopaedic medical device manufacturers in an ongoing investigation into the relationships between orthopaedic surgeons and other medical professionals and industry.

In mid-December, Exactech, Inc., and Wright Medical Group, Inc. were both asked to furnish records relating to any consulting and professional service agreements with orthopaedic surgeons from 1998 through the present. Both companies have said they will fully cooperate with the request.

In September 2007, the DOJ settled with five orthopaedic device makers in the initial phase of this investigation. The companies agreed to pay fines, disclose relationships, and be monitored for 18 months as part of the settlements.
