OREF, NREF collaborate on spine care
The Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF) and the Neurosurgery Research and Education Foundation (NREF) have collaborated to create the Collaborative Spine Research Foundation (CSRF), a nonprofit organization to cultivate multidisciplinary clinical spine research.

The CSRF’s activities will center on advancing the science and practice of the highest quality spine care. Its board of directors will have an equal number of neurosurgeons and orthopaedic surgeons and will oversee the establishment of grant and award criteria; the establishment and enforcement of conflict-of-interest standards; the recruitment of qualified, independent peer-review teams; and the development of strategies to secure financial support from spine-care stakeholders.

“This collaboration recognizes the overwhelming advantages of multidisciplinary medicine,” said S. Terry Canale, MD, OREF board president. “It is a huge step forward for better clinical research.”

RJOS mentoring programs
The Ruth Jackson Orthopaedic Society (RJOS) is updating and improving its mentoring program and the RJOS resident specialty/practice information pamphlet to reflect changes in practice patterns, such as hospital-employment, locum tenens, and part-time practice settings as well as more traditional settings.

RJOS plans to launch a mentoring session to match students with its practicing members at its annual meeting in San Francisco. New guidelines for mentors and mentees are being developed to promote a mutually positive experience.

RJOS is also reaching out to medical schools and residency coordinators and will make a brief presentation to residency coordinators at the AAOS Annual Meeting in San Francisco detailing the many opportunities available to residents and students through the RJOS.
