ORS announces new award
The Orthopaedic Research Society (ORS) is dedicated to fostering excellence in orthopaedic research and increasing the representation of original research in clinical and translational medical research among clinician scientists. Toward this goal, the ORS is pleased to announce the “ORS Travel Awards in Orthopaedic Research Translation.”

This award recognizes clinician scientists and clinical investigators who are in the early stages of their careers and have played a key or leading role in an original research project in clinical or translational medicine, and who have demonstrated excellence in training and a commitment to orthopaedic research. Recipients of the ORS Travel Award in Research Translation will present their work at a clinical and translational research award session at the ORS annual meeting and will receive a $500 honorarium, travel reimbursement for attending the ORS Annual Meeting (up to $1000) pending submission of receipts for transportation and hotel, and 2 years of free registration for the ORS annual meeting.

Five (5) recipients will be selected. Award determinations will be made based on the quality of the applicant’s study described in a submitted abstract in the area of clinical or translational research, as determined by the ORS special projects committee and program committee, and satisfaction of all eligibility criteria.

Applications must be received by Sept. 1, 2009. For eligibility requirements and the application process, visit the ORS Web site.

ORS issues call for abstracts
The ORS Program Committee invites abstract submissions for the 56th annual meeting, March 6–9, 2010, in New Orleans.

You do not need to be a member of the ORS to submit an abstract. Abstracts should be on topics of immediate and future concern to individuals engaged in research related to the musculoskeletal system. The online process is user-friendly and provides email confirmation that your submission was received.

Abstract submission is now open and will close at 5:00 p.m. on Aug. 31, 2009. More information is available on the ORS Web site.

OTA prepares to celebrate 25th anniversary meeting
Online registration is now open for the 25th anniversary meeting of the Orthopaedic Trauma Association (OTA), Oct. 7–10, 2009, in San Diego. Attendees may earn up to 30 CME credits.

Faxed registrations must be received by Sept. 9; the online registration deadline is Sept. 16. Premeeting events include a basic science focus forum, a masters level trauma coding course, and a disaster management and emergency preparedness course.

David C. Templeman, MD, OTA president; William M Ricci, MD, and James A. Goulet, MD, annual meeting program co-chairs; and local hosts Michael T. Mazurek, MD, and Jeffrey M. Smith, MD, welcome your participation.

Major symposia topics include assessment of fracture healing; surgical timing—what is emergent and what is not; and graft options for bone defects. Nearly 200 new scientific trauma abstracts will be presented, including 80 podium presentations and 115 posters. Attendees will be able to participate in hands-on skills labs, case presentations, and mini symposia and visit 70 scientific exhibits.

OTA will hold a concurrent comprehensive fracture course for residents, Oct. 7–10. Residents will learn from more than 60 OTA members, participate in discussions, and take part in hands-on skills labs. All residents seeking an opportunity to learn from orthopaedic trauma experts in an interactive, hands-on environment are encouraged to register for this opportunity.
