AANA seeks participants for complications study
The Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA) is currently recruiting surgeons to participate in a 6-month study of complications associated with arthroscopic knee and shoulder surgeries. Through the creation of a prospective database and identification of risk factors, the study’s goal is to enhance physician education and increase patient safety. Participants need not be members of AANA, but they must be board-certified in the United States and perform a minimum of 10 knee and shoulder arthroscopic surgeries per month. Data collection is scheduled to begin during the third quarter of 2010. For more information, visit www.aana.org
Do more for your patients with AOA’s Own the Bone program
Join hospitals and clinics across the country in implementing the American Orthopaedic Association’s (AOA) Own the Bone program. This multispecialty quality improvement initiative is designed to educate clinicians and patients on bone health, osteoporosis, and the prevention of fragility fractures.
Own the Bone provides orthopaedic practices the documentation needed for Physician Quality Reporting Initiative measures related to osteoporosis and anticipated Joint Commission standards, and reflects the inclusion of measures and guidelines from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the American Medical Association, and the National Osteoporosis Foundation.
Own the Bone members can measure performance to metrics against other institutions participating in the program. The program also provides downloadable patient education materials and letters to patients and primary care physicians and public relations materials to help market your hospital within your community.

AOSSM seeks research volunteers
The AOSSM is seeking volunteers to help conduct two research projects that focus on elbow and shoulder problems in young pitchers (9–18 years old). The first project is a survey-based study that assesses the extent to which young pitchers engage in types and levels of throwing that may put them at risk for overuse injuries. The second project will target pitchers who seek treatment from an orthopaedic surgeon and explore the relationships among pitching variables, elbow and shoulder overuse injuries, and adaptive changes to the elbow and shoulder.
AOSSM members with ties to youth leagues or teams in their communities and those who treat 20 or more young pitchers each year are needed to help with the studies. For additional information, contact Bart Mann at bart@aossm.org
AOSSM announces osteoarthritis grants
AOSSM, in partnership with Genzyme Biosurgery, announces a new research grant program to fund investigations related to early osteoarthritis (OA) and/or prevention of OA progression. As part of the program, two separate grants will be offered. The first grant will provide a $50,000 per year renewable award, subject to an annual progress review, for 3 years ($150,000 total) to support a clinical research study. The second grant will be a one-time award of $50,000 to support a lab/basic science project to separate investigators over 3 successive years. The submission deadline for both grants is Aug. 1, 2010. To download application materials, go to www.sportsmed.org and click on the Research tab.

AOSSM Post-Joint Injury Osteoarthritis Conference II
The AOSSM’s Post-Joint Injury Osteoarthritis Conference II will be held Dec. 2–5, 2010, in New Orleans. A follow-up to an NIH-funded meeting in 2008, the scientific conference will explore the association between joint injury and the development of osteoarthritis (OA), and will focus on considerations and requirements for a multicenter clinical study of human subjects following anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury for the possible development of a clinical initiative in this area.
Approximately 20 attendance slots are reserved for individuals who will not make a presentation but who can actively contribute to the discussions. If you are interested in being considered as a participant, please send your CV and a cover letter explaining your clinical and relevant research experience (eg, record of publication, presentations, or research in OA and/or cartilage) to Bart Mann at bart@aossm.org
Researchers and clinicians who are younger tham age 42 years, women, minorities, and people with disabilities are especially encouraged to apply. For more information, click on Research Meetings at www.sportsmed.org

USBJD seeks young investigators
The United States Bone and Joint Decade’s (USBJD) grant mentoring program provides early-career clinical investigators an opportunity to work with experienced orthopaedic researchers to assist them in securing funding and other survival skills required for pursuing an academic career.
This program is open to promising junior faculty, senior fellows, or postdoctoral researchers nominated by their department or division chairs. It is also open to senior fellows or residents who are doing research and have a faculty appointment in place or confirmed. Basic and clinical investigators, without or with training awards (including K awards) are invited to apply. Investigators selected to take part in the program attend two workshops, 12 to 18 months apart, and work with faculty between workshops to develop their grant applications. The next workshop is scheduled to take place in October 2010 in either Vancouver, BC, or Toronto. The unique aspect of this program is the opportunity for attendees to maintain a relationship with a mentor until their application is funded.
The application deadline for the upcoming cycle (fall 2010 workshop) is July 15, 2010; the deadline to apply for the spring 2011 cycle is Jan. 15, 2011. For more information, visit The United States Bone and Joint Decade.
