Register now for ACPOC annual meeting
Registration is now open for the 2010 Annual Meeting of the Association of Children’s Prosthetic-Orthotic Clinics (ACPOC), being held in combination with the Orthopaedic Rehabilitation Association (ORA), at the Sheraton Sand Key Resort, Clearwater, Fla., June 2–5. The local hosts will be Janet Marshall, CPO; Sandra Smith, PT; and the Shriners Hospital, Tampa, Fla.
As the Hector Kay Lecturer, Kenneth J. Guidera, MD, chief of staff, Shriners Hospital Twin Cities, Minneapolis, will present “An Update of New Trends in the Field of Pediatric Orthopaedics.” The Presidential Guest Speaker will be René Baumgartner, MD, emeritus professor of orthopaedic surgery, department of prosthetics, orthotics & related surgery, University of Münster, Germany, presenting: “Amputation, Prosthetics & Rehabilitation in Children.” The meeting will also include the Physician-Guided Case Study Forum; the New Investigator Research Award, presented by Otto Bock; and the Vernon Nichols Award & Presentation, provided by the ORA.

AOA seeks participants for Own the Bone
The American Orthopaedic Association’s (AOA) Own the Bone is a Web-based quality improvement program designed to educate clinicians and patients on bone health, osteoporosis, and the prevention of fragility fractures. Own the Bone is simple to enroll in, easy to use, and includes a myriad of tools to make caring for your fragility fracture patients more effective and efficient. Own the Bone’s quality improvement program includes a national Web-based registry that generates patient and physician letters highlighting the patient’s risk factors, offers access to a fast growing best practice library and much more. Own the Bone is currently helping institutions in more than 17 states improve their patients’ bone health. AOSSM grant opportunities, deadlines
Recipients of the Career Development Award (K Award) from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) are eligible for a $50,000 annual supplement grant from the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM). The application deadline date for the award supplement is July 1, 2010.
The AOSSM supplement is intended to encourage more sports medicine orthopaedic surgeons to apply for K Awards by providing an offset to the loss of clinical revenue due to dedicated research time. The supplement is open to individuals regardless of time since training. Applicants must first obtain an NIH K Award and have an active award to be eligible. To apply for the supplement, send a copy of your letter of award from NIH, your NIH Biosketch, and the Career Development Plan from your NIH application to Bart Mann at bart@aossm.org

ASES abstract, application deadlines
May 5, 2010, is the deadline date for submitting abstracts for the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) 2010 Closed Meeting, Oct. 20–23, in Scottsdale, Ariz. It is also the deadline for submitting abstracts for the ASES 2011 Specialty Day Meeting, Feb. 19, 2011, in San Diego. The ASES is accepting applications for its 2011 Exchange Fellowship Program. Fellows will be eligible for an ASES Research Grant and will receive an expense-paid trip to the ASES Closed Meeting the following year to present their travel experiences. The application deadline date is Sept. 15, 2010.
Applications are now being accepted for the ASES 2011 Research Grant Award. The $20,000 grant is for basic or clinical investigations and is open to orthopaedic departments only; proposals must be in NIH R01 format and no longer than 10 pages. The application deadline date is Sept. 9, 2010. Awardees will be notified by December 2010.

ASSH application deadlines
The American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH) is accepting applications for the 2010 Andrew J. Weiland Medal for Outstanding Research in Hand Surgery. The medal is awarded annually to a midcareer researcher dedicated to advancing patient care in the field of hand surgery. The deadline for applications is April 1. The application deadline for the 2010 American Foundation for Surgery of the Hand–Health Volunteers Overseas (AFSH-HVO) Young Surgeon Traveling Fellowship is March 31. All eligible surgeons (R3, R4, R5, Fellows, and Surgeons within 3 years of completing their fellowship) with an interest in spending 4 weeks at an appropriate HVO teaching site in a developing country are invited to apply. OTA offers resident course
Residents will have the opportunity to learn from and interact with Orthopaedic Trauma Association (OTA) faculty during the Comprehensive Fracture Course for Residents (PGY2 and PGY3) April 15–17, in Rosemont, Ill. Co-chaired by David F. Hubbard, MD, and Matthew L. Graves, MD, this course provides a comprehensive survey of orthopaedic trauma in a fast-paced, interactive format employing hands-on lab exercises, multiple case discussion sessions, and short key point lectures.

OTA International Trauma Care Forum
The OTA 2nd Annual International Trauma Care Forum is scheduled for Oct. 13, 2010, a day before the start of the OTA annual meeting (Oct 14–16). Both meetings will take place in Baltimore. The one-day forum is an excellent opportunity to address the delivery of musculoskeletal trauma care in developing and emerging regions. Codirected by William DeLong Jr., MD; Andrew Schmidt, MD; and Wade Smith, MD, the forum will include scientific presentations and invited lectures on topics unique to international orthopaedic care.
