ACPOC annual meeting
The Association of Children’s Prosthetic-Orthotic Clinics (ACPOC) will hold their 2012 annual meeting April 11–14, at The Banff Centre, Banff, Alberta, Canada. The objectives of the meeting are to present and evaluate new ideas, techniques, methodology, and treatment of children with limb deficiencies, and to provide participants with an opportunity to clinically evaluate and directly interact with proponents of new research knowledge pertinent to the management of these children.

AOSSM seeks grant applicants
The American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM), in partnership with the Musculoskeletal Foundation (MTF), is pleased to announce a one-time grant of $300,000 to support a research project focused on meniscal allograft transplantation. Collaborative, multicenter studies will be strongly encouraged and will be given special consideration in the review process. At least one investigator on each application must be a full AOSSM member. The application deadline is April 1, 2012.
Also available is a new grant sponsored by Smith & Nephew to support development of innovative approaches to measuring the effects of surgical procedures in orthopaedic sports medicine. This $25,000 grant is meant to advance the evaluation of clinical outcomes related to surgery by encouraging development of novel approaches, techniques, and/or methodology that will facilitate and enhance clinical research. The award provides start-up funding for the development of tools and/or technology that can be leveraged and used for future, larger-scale clinical research studies. The principal investigator or a co-investigator must be an AOSSM member in good standing. The deadline for applications is April 17, 2012.

ASSH grant application deadlines
The ASSH is accepting applications for the 2012 Andrew J. Weiland Medal for Outstanding Research in Hand Surgery. The medal is awarded annually to a midcareer researcher dedicated to advancing patient care in the field of hand surgery. Applicants must be midcareer surgeons who are younger than 55 years of age or fewer than 15 years from hand fellowship training. The deadline for applications is April 2.

The American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) invites abstracts for the ASES 2013 Open Meeting/Specialty Day. The submission deadline is May 2, 2012. All abstracts must be submitted electronically.

Apply now for 2013 ASES Research Grant
Applications are now being accepted for the ASES 2013 Research Grant Award. The $20,000 grant is for basic or clinical investigations and is open to orthopaedic departments only; proposals must be in NIH R01 format and no longer than 10 pages. The application deadline is Sept. 6, 2012.

2013 ASES Exchange Fellowship Program
The ASES is accepting applications for its 2013 Exchange Fellowship Program. Traveling Fellows are eligible for an ASES Research Grant and receive an expense-paid trip to the ASES Closed Meeting the following year to present their travel experiences. The application deadline date is Sept. 12, 2012.

ORS announces Video Outreach Competition
The Orthopaedic Research Society (ORS) invites submissions for its Video Outreach Competition. The purpose of this competition is to encourage orthopaedic researchers to educate the public and media about significant musculoskeletal research topics in innovative, accessible, understandable, and fun ways. A panel of multidisciplinary musculoskeletal researchers will evaluate the videos on their use of innovative methods to translate complex science into easy-to-understand concepts. Awards will be presented at the 2013 ORS Annual Meeting in San Antonio, January 26–29, 2013; the winning videos will be shown during the awards ceremony. Winners will also receive travel awards to the 2013 ORS Annual Meeting. The submissions deadline is Sept. 1, 2012.

OTA Residents Comprehensive Fracture Course
The Orthopaedic Trauma Association (OTA) Residents Comprehensive Fracture Course will be held April 26–28, in Lombard, Ill. The redesigned course will be presented in six separate small-group modules, with 20 residents and up to 5 faculty per module. Topics include the fundamental principles of care for diaphyseal, articular, foot and ankle, geriatric, pediatric, and pelvis/polytrauma fractures. The modules will include a rapid-fire series of mini-lectures, case-based discussions, video demonstrations of techniques, and hands-on skill lab exercises. PGY-2 and PGY-4 residents are encouraged to attend. Registration and housing scholarships are available.

OTA volunteers needed in Ghana
OTA members are needed as volunteer faculty at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), in Ghana. The orthopaedic specialty training program at KATH is a shared project of the AAOS, the OTA, and Orthopaedics Overseas, the orthopaedic section of Health Volunteers Overseas. Although trauma care is the current primary focus, pediatric orthopaedic volunteers are also particularly welcome, and an eventual need for all areas of orthopaedic surgery is expected.

2012 POSNA annual meeting
The 2012 Annual Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America (POSNA) meeting will be held May 16–19, 2012, in Denver. The one-day course on “Adolescent and Young Adult Hip Disorders” will be held on May 16, prior to the start of the annual meeting. On May 19, during a special session on quality, safety, and value, representatives from NASCAR racing, the space industry, and the Boeing Company will share lessons learned from their respective cultures of safety and performance.
The early registration deadline for the annual meeting and the one-day course is March 16; preregistration closes April 13. After April 13, registrations will be accepted on site.

SOMOS History Project Committee needs your help
The Society of Military Orthopaedic Surgeons (SOMOS) History Project Committee has been charged with reconstructing the history of SOMOS. The committee is seeking information on the organization’s early history, including the names of SOMOS presidents, locations of annual meetings, and names of the winners of the Norman T. Apply for the USBJI grant mentoring program
The United States Bone and Joint Initiative (USBJI) grant mentoring program provides early-career clinical investigators an opportunity to work with experienced researchers to assist them in securing funding and other survival skills required for pursuing an academic career. The program offers attendees the opportunity to maintain relationships with mentors until their application is funded.
The grant mentoring program is open to promising junior faculty, senior fellows or postdoctoral researchers nominated by their department or division chairs. It is also open to senior fellows or residents who are doing research and have a faculty appointment in place or confirmed. Basic and clinical investigators, without or with training awards (including K awards), are invited to apply.
Investigators selected to take part in the program will attend two workshops, 12 to18 months apart, and work with faculty between workshops to develop their grant applications.
