AAHKS News
The American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS) has selected Robert A. Hall, MEd, CAE, as its new executive director. Mr. Hall has more than 25 years of association management experience, primarily with healthcare associations. His most recent position was as executive director of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry in Madison, Wisc. Abstracts for the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) Specialty Day 2009 are due June 4, 2008. Program chair W. Hodges Davis, MD, is looking forward to a great program on Feb. 28, 2009, at The Venetian Resort Hotel Casino in Las Vegas. Submit your abstract online at www.aofas.org

Five AOFAS members have been chosen in the 2008 Traveling Fellowship Awards Program, which begins at the 2008 AOFAS Annual Summer Meeting in Denver and continue with visits to Chicago, Toronto, Columbus, Houston, and Dallas. This program is made possible through an unrestricted educational grant to the AOFAS Outreach and Education Fund from DJO Incorporated. The 2008 AOFAS Traveling Fellows are: Markus Knupp, MD, of Liestal, Switzerland; Ian L.D. Le, MD, FRCS(C); of Calgary, Alberta, Canada; Patricia Parra Téllez, MD, of Mexico City; Nicholas Savva, FRCS (Tr & Orth), of Dorchester, Dorset, United Kingdom; and José Elías Vergara, MD, of Panama City, Panama.

CSRS News
The Cervical Spine Research Society (CSRS) online abstract center is now available for submission of abstracts for consideration as podium or poster presentations at the 2008 annual meeting in Austin, Texas, Dec. 4-6. This year, the program committee is particularly interested in topics dealing with trauma, complications, and innovative treatment strategies. The deadline for submitting abstracts is June 3. Detailed information can be found on the CSRS Web site (meeting link) at www.csrs.org

Individuals who have been invited to submit manuscripts for the 2008 grant funding review cycle have until May 31 to submit 10 complete copies. Grant funding ranges from $15,000 to $75,000. Global call for osteoporosis abstracts
The International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) is now accepting abstracts for the IOF World Congress on Osteoporosis. The deadline for submitting abstracts is June 2. The Congress will be held Dec. 3-7, 2008, in Bangkok, Thailand, and will provide a comprehensive overview of the latest data on all aspects of basic and clinical osteoporosis research, including developments in bone cell biology, epidemiology, diagnosis and treatment. Presentations will focus on new drugs that can prevent bone loss and reduce fracture occurrence for patients with osteoporosis.

New abstracts as well as abstracts that have been presented previously, but that have not been published as a full paper, will be considered.

ASSH News
Applications for the 2008 Bunnell Traveling Fellowship are due June 1. The Bunnell Traveling Fellowship provides scholarship funding for a young hand surgeon to pursue an educational or academic goal that requires national and international collaboration and fosters the principles of scholarship of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH). Applicants are expected to develop a fellowship theme that clearly delineates a specific area of clinical interest, a scientific pursuit, or an educational mission that the applicant would like to investigate during the fellowship. The Bunnell Fellow will be expected to present a scientific report at the ASSH annual meeting and to submit a written manuscript at the conclusion of the trip to be considered for publication in the Journal of Hand Surgery.

Applicants must have completed a fellowship in hand surgery between June 30, 1998, and the present, be active members of the ASSH, and be within 7 years of their election to ASSH active membership. Applications are available online at www.assh.org

OREF News
The Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF) welcomes William P. Cooney III, MD, as its new Board of Trustees chair. Dr. Cooney is a longtime OREF donor and brings substantial insight and perspective to his new role, having served as an OREF trustee since 2003, most recently as chair-elect and vice-chair, development.

S. Terry Canale, MD, will serve as chair-elect while continuing as vice-chair, corporate relations. Jo A. Hannafin, MD, PhD, renews her service as trustee as the newly named vice-chair, development. Continuing members of the executive committee include Thomas A. Einhorn, MD, vice-chair grants; H. Michael Immel, vice-chair, national board; William J. Robb III, MD, treasurer; and Regis J. O’Keefe, MD, secretary. New board members welcomed at OREF’s March 4 annual meeting include Thomas P. Schmalzried, MD; Kurt P. Spindler, MD; Joshua J. Jacobs, MD, representing the Orthopaedic Research Society; and Oheneba Boachie-Adjei, MD, representing AAOS.
