AOFAS seeks abstracts
Abstracts are now being accepted for the 2012 annual meeting of the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS), scheduled for June 20–23, 2012, at the Hilton Bayshore in San Diego. The deadline to submit is Jan. 4, 2012. For more information, visit www.aofas.org

Apply now for hand surgery clinical research grant
The American Foundation for Surgery of the Hand, in conjunction with the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH), will commemorate its 25th Anniversary by awarding a 2-year, $100,000 grant for a well-designed, prospective multicenter clinical research study. The ASSH Research Committee will review proposals and select the recipient of this grant, to be announced at the 2012 ASSH Annual Meeting in Chicago. Applications from surgeons, researchers, and allied health professionals are welcome. More information is available at www.assh.org/professionals/research

NASS seeks abstracts
The North American Spine Society (NASS) and the Japanese Society for Spine Surgery and Related Research (JSSR) will sponsor Spine Across the Sea, July 29–Aug. 2, 2012, in Kauai, Hawaii. Held every 3 years, Spine Across the Sea includes oral and poster scientific presentations as well as symposia. The abstract submission system will be open until Dec. 16, 2011. AOSSM/AAOS Sports Medicine Media Guide
Available online, the new American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM)/AAOS Sports Medicine Media Guide, “An Illustrated Resource on the Most Common Injuries and Treatments in Sports,” provides comprehensive, easy-to-understand descriptions of common sports injuries. The guide is divided into 20 sections that focus on specific injuries and provide information on the causes, diagnosis, and treatment, as well as related definitions, statistics, and resources. The sections are written by orthopaedic surgeons or other medical professionals who offer insight on how to avoid injury, what to expect in recovery, and how to get back into the game.

Hip Society 2012 British Traveling Fellowship
The Hip Society’s 2012 British Traveling Fellowship is limited to North American hip surgeons younger than 40 years of age. Documentation of interest in advancing hip surgery (publications, research, and presentations) is required. Applicants must be within 1 to 5 years of completion of fellowship. The application deadline is Dec. 1, 2011.

OMEGA grant applications
OMeGA is currently accepting fellowship grant applications for the 2013–2014 academic year. This timing allows grant recipient programs in all orthopaedic specialties to rely on OMeGA funding for their match applications and selections. Grants (up to $75,000) may be used for a fellow’s salary, benefits, and educational expenses. The application deadline is Dec. 14, 2011.

OTA seeks Resident Research Grant Applications
The Orthopaedic Trauma Association (OTA) is currently accepting applications for Resident Research Grants through Nov. 30, 2011. Applications will be reviewed and graded in a blinded fashion by members of the OTA Research Committee for anticipated scientific merit, anticipated long-term impact on orthopaedic trauma care, and general topic interest. Researchers will be informed of the intent to fund or not fund their research project in April 2012.

The principal investigator must be an orthopaedic resident (the coprincipal investigator does not have to be a resident). Either the principal investigator or the coprincipal investigator must be an OTA member. The research must be conducted in North America. OTA Resident Grants will not be awarded to subsidize larger ongoing research projects. Budgets cannot exceed $10,000. For more information, visit www.ota.org

Scholarships available for OTA resident course
The OTA 8th Annual Advanced Trauma Techniques Course for Residents will be held Jan. 13–14, 2012, at the Peabody Orlando in Orlando, Florida. This course is designed for the advanced level orthopaedic resident (PGY 4–5) with basic surgical fracture fixation experience. Discussions will focus on techniques for patient positioning, surgical exposure, fracture reduction, and application of fixation for extremity fractures. Sessions include the use of videos, photographs, and diagrams to illustrate techniques, as well as hands-on surgical skills sawbone labs and small group case discussions in which typical problematic fracture cases are discussed in detail.
