AOA introduces Clinical Trials Course
The American Orthopaedic Association’s (AOA) Clinical Trials Course covers all aspects of how to properly conduct a clinical trial, including formulating questions, identifying participants, acquiring necessary funding, and publishing and publicizing the results.
It includes 22 comprehensive modules that can easily be incorporated into residents’ training or used by faculty members. The program features a compact disc (CD) with PowerPoint presentations, the pre- and post-exams, and a list of key references. Participants can be tested before and after the course to assess their knowledge and learning gains. A comprehensive facilitator’s guide is also included.

Apply now for an AOA Traveling Fellowship
AOA’s Leadership Fellowships recognize young leaders for their early contributions to orthopaedics. Tours are structured to develop leadership skills and networks and offer opportunities to confront critical issues affecting orthopaedics. A significant benefit of the Fellowships is the interactions and experiences with the world’s orthopaedic leaders and previous AOA fellows.

AOSSM seeks abstracts for 2009 meeting
Abstracts are now being accepted for the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) 2009 annual meeting, which will be held July 9–12, 2009, in Keystone, Colo. The deadline for submissions is Nov. 17, 2008. To submit your abstract online, visit www.sportsmed.org/abstracts

AOSSM announces research award and grant deadlines
Nov. 1, 2008, is the deadline for the following research awards sponsored by the AOSSM: Cabaud Memorial Award, for the best paper concerning hard or soft tissue biology, in vitro research, laboratory or bench-type research, or in vivo animal research; Excellence in Research Award, for the best paper in any category with a primary author under age 40 at the AOSSM Annual Meeting; O’Donoghue Sports Injury Research Award, for the best overall paper that deals with clinical-based research or human in vivo research; and the National Collegiate Athletic Association Research Award, for the best paper submitted that pertains to the health, safety, and well-being of collegiate student-athletes.
Dec. 1, 2008, is the deadline for applications for the following grants: Young Investigator Grant, which is specifically designed to support young researchers who have not received prior funding, and the Kirkley Grant, which provides start-up or supplemental funding for an outcome research project or pilot study (not restricted to young investigators).

ASSH introduces new publications
The American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH) is pleased to introduce three new texts and a series of patient education materials.
Upper Extremity Nerve Repair Tips and Techniques: A Master Skills Publication, edited by David J. Slutsky, MD, FRCS(C), is a compilation of new and old techniques for brachial plexus and peripheral nerve reconstruction written by acknowledged experts in the field from across North America and Europe. Each chapter is beautifully illustrated with full color pictures and an accompanying 2-volume DVD includes many illustrative videos highlighting these techniques.
Fractures of the Upper Extremity: A Master Skills Publication, edited by Jeffery E. Budoff, MD, is designed to provide residents, fellows, and established surgeons with a powerful tool to advance their knowledge and skills in treating fractures of the upper extremity. Organized by anatomic region, its in-depth focus contains details, pearls, and pitfalls, with chapters focused on the “bottom-line, step-by-step, how-to” of treating complicated fractures using the most advanced technology and techniques.
Crucial Elements in Hand Surgery 2, edited by Pedro Beredjiklian, MD, is a DVD/CD-ROM that contains educational presentations on hand surgery. With more than 50 percent more material and 20 percent more presentations over the original Crucial Elements in Hand Surgery, this educational tool includes a rehabilitation section and expanded shoulder, elbow and vascular content.
Patient education brochures are written by the ASSH Public Education Committee. The easy-to-understand style, illustrations, and lay terminology give a straightforward description of the respective condition. The brochures also include room for notes, physician comments, and follow-up treatment instructions. Hip Society Awards 2009
The Hip Society announces three awards for papers submitted from various training programs or from practicing orthopaedic surgeons for presentation at the annual Hip Society meeting. Papers submitted for the Otto Aufranc and John Charnley Awards should be based on innovative research, either clinical or basic, encompassing important advances in the management of hip disorders. The Frank Stinchfield Award is given to a resident or fellow in training who submits an outstanding contribution concerning hip problems.
Any or all of these awards will be granted annually at the discretion of the Awards Committee of The Hip Society. The author(s) of each winning paper will receive a $2,000 honorarium. Papers must be submitted by Nov. 1, 2008.

ABJS issues call for Andry, Urist Awards
The Association of Bone and Joint Surgeons (ABJS), in conjunction with Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research (CORR), seeks submissions for the 2009 Nicolas Andry Award and Marshall R. Urist Young Investigator Award. All manuscripts must be submitted electronically via the CORR Web site (www.editorialmanager.com/corr) no later than Nov. 1, 2008.
In addition, a precise statement of the primary author’s role in the submitted work and a current curriculum vitae must be e-mailed to abjs@aaos.org

ACPOC: New research award, call for papers
The Association of Children’s Prosthetic-Orthotic Clinics (ACPOC) announces an annual New Investigator Research Award sponsored by Otto Bock Healthcare. Four winners will be selected by the Program Committee. Winners will present their papers at the 2009 Annual Meeting in Tempe, Ariz.; registration fees will be waived. A year of membership will also be offered to the winners.
For eligibility requirements, award criteria, and submission instructions, please see the Call for Papers on the ACPOC Web site. The deadline for submission is Nov. 1, 2008.

Online registration is now open for the 2008 annual meeting of the Cervical Spine Research Society (CSRS). The meeting will be held Dec. 4-6, 2008, at the Renaissance Austin Hotel, Austin, Texas, under the direction of scientific program chair Michael G. Fehlings, MD, PhD. It will be preceded by an instructional course on “Surgical Techniques, Complications, Trauma, & Current Controversies in Anterior Fixation,” held on Dec. 3, 2008.
