Ultrasonic osteotome enhanced
The Misonix BoneScalpel™ Ultrasonic Bone Cutting System now includes a new 30 mm blade line extension, designed for precisely transecting larger bones and/or for providing deeper access into body cavities. An ultrasonic osteotome used for tissue-selective bone dissection, the BoneScalpel encourages en-bloc bone removal and refined osteotomies, while sparing elastic soft-tissue structures. Loss of viable bone is minimal and controllable, according to the manufacturer. The BoneScalpel can be used for bone removal in the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine, including deformity surgery. Occipito-cervico-thoracic system
Biomet Spine’s new occipito-cervico-thoracic system, the Lineum™ OCT Spine System, incorporates Translation™ Screw Technology. Translation Screw Technology offers 3 mm of medial/lateral translation to encourage optimal screw placement, reportedly requires less rod manipulation, and enables easier rod introduction.

The Lineum OCT System also incorporates enhancements designed to encourage procedural efficiency including a broader range of customizable construct options, a new adjustable depth drill guide, and new rod reducers. For more information, visit www.biomet.com/spine

New implant for minimally invasive, traditional spine surgery
ulrich medical USA, Inc.’s golden gate® Lateral Plate System (A) is a spinal implant system for anterior surgical stabilization of the thoracic and lumbar spine (T1-L5). The system’s two-part plate design (C-plate and gate) is designed to give the surgeon an unobstructed field of vision and open access to the intervertebral space during surgery. The system’s locking plate technology incorporates cannulated and conical polyaxial screws allowing for polyaxial movement to maintain proper balance and ease of insertion during surgery. Deformity spinal system to feature 4D technology
K2M’s MESA Rail Deformity Spinal System (B) to address complex spinal curves will be the first product to feature the company’s recently introduced Rail 4D™ Technology. Inspired by structural I-beam geometry and intended as an alternative to traditional round spinal rods, Rail reportedly provides enhanced structural rigidity, while maintaining a lower profile than set screw-based systems. The technology was designed to complement the company’s existing MESA® Locking and Cricket® Reduction Technologies.

Due to the beam-like shape, reducing the Rail Cricket devices will inherently result in rotation of the vertebral bodies as they are pulled up to the Rail, according to K2M. The design offers fixation options for surgeons by helping to apply forces during axial correction of difficult spinal curvatures. It has the potential to reduce intraoperative rod “flattening,” decrease the need for over-bending the construct, and give surgeons more predictability and direct control over sagittal balance.

Bipolar sealer with cutting for orthopaedic surgery
Medtronic’s Aquamantys® 3 BSC 9.1S Bipolar Sealer with Cutting (C) is said to provide surgeons with the ability to optimize efficiency in surgical cases by combining hemostatic sealing capabilities for soft tissue and bone and monopolar cutting functionality in a single device. The BSC 9.1S uses Transcollation® technology, a combination of radiofrequency energy and saline that, according to Medtronic, has been shown to reduce blood loss and maintain patient hemoglobin levels when used during orthopaedic procedures.

Spine systems cleared to treat AIS
DePuy Synthes Spine’s EXPEDIUM® (D), VIPER®, and VIPER®2 Spine Systems have received 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use on patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). The new indication clears the way for the devices to be used in posterior non-cervical pedicle screw fixation in adolescent patients.

Complex spine minimally invasive retractor system
K2M, Inc. recently launched the SERENGETI® Complex Spine Minimally Invasive Retractor System, which features instrumentation designed to perform complex reduction, controlled manipulation, and above-skin compression and distraction without compromising the option for direct visualization. The system reportedly enables surgeons to attach and remove the minimally invasive reduction tunnels intraoperatively, combining the benefits of a traditional rigid system with those of the flexible polymer SERENGETI Retractor.

Trauma plating system receives FDA clearance
The small fragment plating line of aap Implantate AG’s LOQTEQ® product family has received 510(k) FDA clearance. LOQTEQ is an anatomic, angle-stable orthopaedic trauma plating system that enables lock and compression with a single hole and provides surgeons with variable compression from 0 mm to 2 mm. LOQTEQ consists of a straight plate, reconstruction plate, one-third tubular plate, and LOQTEQ cortical screws.

Lateral lumbar cage system
Designed for lateral lumbar fusions, LDR Medical’s Avenue L Lateral Lumbar Cage System features enhanced in-line, self-guided VerteBRIDGE® plating technology to facilitate simplified cage insertion and zero-profile, intradiscal, integrated fixation through a direct minimally invasive approach. The system also includes an inserter designed to protect anatomic structures while implanting the cage and plating. Avenue L is compatible with the direct lateral transpsoatic and prepsoatic approaches, according to LDR. For more information, visit www.ldrmedical.com
