AAHKS membership applications now accepted year round

The American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons is now accepting membership applications year-round. View requirements and download a copy of the application at www.aahks.org

ACPOC issues call for papers
The Association of Children’s Prosthetic-Orthotic Clinics (ACPOC) is now accepting online submission of abstracts for the 2010 Annual Meeting, which will be held June 2–5, 2010 at the Sheraton Sand Key Resort, Clearwater, Fla., in conjunction with the Orthopaedic Rehabilitation Association.

Manuscripts are also sought for the 2010 New Investigator Research Award. Manuscripts must be submitted online. The deadline for submissions is Nov. 16, 2009. For more information contact the ACPOC office at (847) 698-1637 or e-mail acpoc@aaos.org

AOA~Kellogg Leadership Series—last offering
The American Orthopaedic Association (AOA)~Kellogg Leadership Series is offering the last of its series. “The Power of Information is in the Numbers,” will be held Nov. 20–22, 2009, at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management (Evanston, Ill., campus).

Module 5 will show you how to how to interpret a spreadsheet and what the numbers really mean. It will also provide the following: essential tools to help you better forecast resource needs; fundraising tactics and techniques; and essential tools and indicators for assessing financial performance. AOA’s Own the Bone program wins national award
The AOA Own the Bone program won a 2009 National Health Information Merit Award for its patient education materials and Web site. The National Health Information Awards recognize the nation’s best consumer health information programs and materials. Own the Bone educates clinicians and patients on bone health, osteoporosis, and preventing future fragility fractures. The program’s Web site offers patients and providers information designed to help decrease the number of repeat fragility fractures in the United States. ASES presents the international symposium
The American Shoulder and Elbow Society (ASES) will present an international symposium on shoulder and elbow arthroscopy on Oct. 24, 2009, at the New York Marriott Marquis, Times Square in New York City. Continuing medical education (CME) credit will be available.

Hip Society seeks submissions for 2010 awards
The Hip Society is seeking submissions for the Otto Aufranc, John Charnley, and Frank Stinchfield Awards from training programs or practicing orthopaedic surgeons for presentation at the annual Hip Society meeting.

Submissions must be received by Nov. 1, 2009, and should represent original work that has not been previously published nor submitted for publication. Please indicate if your submission is a resident or fellow paper for the Frank Stinchfield Award. Submitted papers must be in publishable form. OREF accepting applications for CDP grants
OREF is now accepting applications for the next cycle of Clinician Development Program (CDP) grants to fund 2010 CME programs in hip and knee arthroplasty, 2010-2011 graduate medical education fellowships in eight subspecialty/practice categories, and 2010-2011 residency enhancement programs. Plan to attend the 2010 ORS annual meeting
The 56th annual meeting of the Orthopaedic Research Society (ORS) will be held March 6–9, 2010, in New Orleans. Showcasing educational symposia, workshops, industry-related events, and other activities, the meeting will emphasize the importance of training and mentoring orthopaedic residents, graduate students, and postdoctoral candidates.

AAOS attendees will be able to attend the ORS meeting on Tuesday with their AAOS badge. In addition, ORS attendees will be able to attend the AAOS meeting on Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday, including access to the AAOS exhibit hall.

AAOS/ORS co-programming on Tuesday will include combined symposia, ORS podium presentations, AAOS Maintenance of Certification session with 4 breakout lectures, ethics and professionalism, statistics, basic science (biology and biomechanics), and Kappa Delta Award paper presentations and the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation Research Award.

POSNA issues call for abstracts
The Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America (POSNA) has issued a call for abstracts for the 2010 POSNA Annual Meeting. The submission deadline is Oct. 16, 2009. Click on “Call for Abstracts” under the “2010 POSNA Annual Meeting” to submit abstracts online at www.posna.org

Make plans to attend the half-day course on “Pediatric trauma: The cases for best treatment” on May 4, 2010, and the POSNA Annual Meeting, May 4-7, 2010, in Waikoloa, Hawaii.

Last call for submissions
The deadline for the following programs is Oct. 1, 2009:

2010 POSNA Research Award—Areas considered for the 2010 POSNA Research Award include patient-based studies, basic science research, and multi-center or society-wide projects. Pilot projects, research with pre-existing funding that may need supplemental support, as well as complete research proposals will also be considered for funding.

The St. Giles Young Investigator Award—This $10,000 education research award will to be presented to a candidate member or an active member who has been with the POSNA for 5 years or less.

The Arthur H. Huene Memorial Award for Excellence and Promise in Pediatric Orthopaedics—Presented by POSNA, under the sponsorship of the St. Giles Foundation, the $30,000 award is intended to be applied to, and the primary criteria for adjudication is, a research project of high quality and potential impact in the field of pediatric orthopaedics.

The Angela S.M. Kuo Young Investigator Memorial Award—The $30,000 award will be presented to an outstanding young researcher to help promote the individual’s long-term research career. Applicants must be an active member of POSNA, 45 years of age or younger, and in independent practice not longer than 12 years. Applicants are eligible to apply for both the POSNA Research Award and the Kuo Award.

DePuy Spine grant—Proposals for this 1-year $25,000 grant should be related to spinal deformity and also relevant to the POSNA mission. The principal investigator must be a POSNA member or demonstrate close affiliation with a POSNA member on the proposed project.
