Three scientific exhibits win Award of Excellence

The 2008 Annual Meeting features 88 Scientific Exhibits, which can be viewed on Level 1 of Moscone West. All the exhibits present valuable information and are well worth visiting. But according to the Exhibits Committee, three are stand-outs.

Committee members Lynn A. Crosby, MD, Chair; J. David Blaha, MD; A. Seth Greenwald, DPhil Oxon; Michael H Huo, MD; Alfonso Mejia, MD; Michael P. Mott, MD; David L. Nelson, MD; Martin Plotkin, MD; William H. Seitz Jr, MD, and Jeffrey L. Visotsky, MD, viewed each exhibit on Wednesday. Exhibits were evaluated based on the following criteria:

medical or scientific contribution
clarity of content
educational value
use of graphics
legibility and design
overall design

The following three Scientific Exhibits were chosen by the committee to receive the Award of Excellence:

SE32: The Influence of Contemporary Knee Design Geometry on High Flexion Motion: A Kinematic Comparison. This computational comparison between reconstructed and normal knee kinematics during high flexion activities was developed by Edward Morra, MSME, and A. Seth Greenwald, DPhil Oxon.

SE67: Application of Anatomic Double Bundle Reconstruction Concept in Revision/Augmentation Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) Surgeries. This exhibit shows how the anatomic double-bundle ACL reconstruction concept can be applied to single-bundle ACL reconstruction, revision ACL surgery, and ACL augmentation. It was developed by Wei Shen, MD; Nicholas J. Honkamp, MD; Brian Forsythe, MD; Sheila Jean McNeill Ingham, MD; and Freddie H. Fu, MD.

SE71: Arthroscopic Management of Labral Tears in the Hip. This review of the six main etiologies of labral tears and the arthroscopic management of labral injuries in the athletic patient was developed by Michael Kenneth Shindle, MD; James Voos, MD; Shane Nho, MD; Katrina DeLaTorre, MSN; and Bryan T. Kelly, MD.

Additionally, approximately 20 of the top Scientific Exhibits were selected for possible inclusion in a fall 2008 supplement to The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery.

Over 200 abstracts were submitted online for the 75th Annual Meeting, including 9 AAOS Committee exhibits and 4 Board of Specialty Societies exhibits.
