Don’t miss the industry relationships symposium

With the reintroduction of the Physician Payment Sunshine Act, the issuance of the Report of the Association of American Medical College’s Task Force on Industry Funding of Medical Education, and the revisions to the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) Code on Interactions with Health Care Professionals and the AdvaMed Code of Ethics, the environment surrounding relationships between orthopaedic surgeons and industry has changed substantially.

Tomorrow, the AAOS will examine that environment from several angles, with a symposium on “The Evolving Orthopaedic Surgeon–Industry Relationship.”

Expert panel addresses issue

Beginning at 10:30 a.m. in the Venetian Ballroom, AAOS President Tony Rankin, MD, will moderate a distinguished panel of experts discussing the current and possible future impact of the changes in orthopaedic surgeon–industry relationships, particularly on research, education, and patient care. Panelists will include a former president of the AAOS, Stuart L. Weinstein, MD, presenting the perspective of an orthopaedic researcher and educator; Christopher L. White, JD, presenting the perspective of the Advanced Medical Technology Association (AdvaMed); Kathleen McDermott, JD, reviewing law, best practices, and ethics from the perspective of a healthcare compliance professional; and Crane M. Pomerantz, JD, assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Nevada.

Mr. Pomerantz has focused on prosecuting healthcare fraud and other white-collar crimes as well as public corruption issues. His responsibilities include grand jury investigations, federal criminal trials, and appellate work. He has prosecuted physiological laboratories, durable medical suppliers, outpatient surgical centers, home health agencies, and individual healthcare providers, including physicians.
