OREF announces 2011 research grants, awards

On Feb. 15, the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF) announced the recipients of more than 300 research and education grants and awards totaling $8.6 million. These totals include 66 research grants and more than 240 educational grants given through the OREF Clinician Development Program.

The OREF Research Grants Committee announced $1.9 million in funding for 66 research grants. Research grants and awards funded included the following:

One Clinician Scientist Grant ($100,000) to Quanjun Cui, MD
One Career Development Grant ($225,000) to Bang H. Hoang, MD
One Clinical Research Award ($20,000) to Donald D. Anderson, PhD
Five Research Grants (totaling more than $300,000) to Danielle S.W. Benoit, PhD; Reuben Gobezie, MD; Sevan Hopyan, MD, PhD; John Kuhn, MD; and Amanda D. Marshall, MD
Eight Young Investigator Grants ($50,000 each) to Robert H. Brophy, MD; Kevin W. Farmer, MD; Wellington K. Hsu, MD; James P. Lawrence, MD; Theodore T. Manson, MD; Ahmad Nassr, MD; Mara L. Schenker, MD; and Wakenda Tyler, MD

Three Orthopaedic Research Society/OREF Travel Awards in

Fifteen OREF/DePuy Orthopaedic Resident Research Project Grants totaling $75,000
Eight Educational Grants totaling $120,250
Fourteen Resident Research Project Grants totaling $62,500

Congratulations
OREF received 354 research grant applications requesting $16.2 million in funding. In December 2010, OREF’s Peer Review Committee volunteers evaluated the scientific merit of each application through a rigorous peer-review process modeled after the National Institutes of Health. The applications were then ranked, and funding decisions were made by the Research Grants Committee.

OREF’s board of trustees congratulates the 2011 grant recipients.
