There’s Value in Research

OREF board president tells how the Foundation serves orthopaedics

I happened upon a remarkable fact recently. According to economists, medical research adds nearly $3.2 trillion annually to the wealth of the United States through increased longevity and improved quality of life.

The value of medical research is something we’ve all seen firsthand in our practices: the grandmother who can now keep up with her grandkids; the child who has a chance to develop normally after suffering from a musculoskeletal disorder; the wounded veteran who can walk again; the injured athlete who can resume his favorite activity.

More than 50 years of supporting orthopaedic research
At the Orthopaedic Research & Education Foundation (OREF), we’re firm believers in the value of medical research. Over the past 50 years, we’ve supported thousands of researchers and provided more than $100 million in research grants.

OREF was founded in 1955 by orthopaedic surgeons to help their colleagues investigate research questions important to the field, independent of commercial concerns. We serve orthopaedics by mentoring new researchers and preparing them to pursue National Institutes of Health grants, awarding grants to orthopaedic surgeons to conduct research, and supporting studies that advance orthopaedics and improve patient care.

To find out more about the research OREF supports, please visit www.oref.org/or stop by the OREF booth in McCormick Place North, Hall B.
