AJRR Hosts Informational Session
Moderated by David G. Lewallen, MD, and William J. Maloney, MD, the American Joint Replacement Registry (AJRR) Informational Session will be held tomorrow in McCormick Place, Room S405, beginning at 9:00 a.m.
Intended for orthopaedic surgeons specializing in joint replacement, hospital executives, and nursing/operating room staff, the free informational session is an opportunity to learn from and interact with leaders of the AJRR. The AJRR was founded in 2009 and is a national, independent, not-for-profit organization with the goal of optimizing patient outcomes through the collection of Level I data on all primary and revision total joint (hip and knee) replacement procedures. Level I data include the following:
- information on patients (eg, name, gender, date of birth, and diagnosis)
- surgeon name and National Provider Identifier (NPI)
- hospital name and NPI
- procedural information, including the implanted component catalog and lot numbers
More than 120 hospitals across the country now contribute Level I data to the AJRR. Findings from Level I registry data have the potential to reduce patient morbidity and mortality, improve patient safety and quality, and provide an early warning system for implant failure,
Since 2009, significant gains have been made in implementing a U.S. registry. After a pilot program and a “lessons-learned” phase, the AJRR is now actively involved in expanding outreach to hospitals. Session participants will learn how the AJRR has grown and operates to benefit orthopaedic surgeons, hospitals, and patients; they will also hear about efforts to expand data collection to include Level II and Level III data in the coming year.
