Get Answers to your MOC Questions

Check out the ABOS booth and attend informational sessions

Have questions about your status in the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) process? Take advantage of these opportunities during the Annual Meeting to interact with ABOS representatives and other MOC experts.

“Maintenance of Certification: The Basics”
ABOS Executive Director Shepard R. Hurwitz, MD, and moderator Joseph A. Bosco III, MD, will present important information and strategies for navigating the MOC process during “Maintenance of Certification: The Basics.”

The session will be presented today in McCormick Place, Room S105, from 11:15 a.m.–12:30 p.m. It’s free for attendees of any of the review courses (Trauma, ICL 181; Shoulder and Elbow, ICL 182; Spine, ICL 183; Sports Medicine, ICL 184; and Hand and Wrist, ICL 185).

Attend the MOC forum
The “Forum for Young Orthopaedic Surgeons with the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons” is designed for senior residents and new practitioners. It provides another opportunity to ask questions of Dr. Hurwitz, who will offer insights into MOC requirements and deadlines.

This free forum will be presented on Thursday from 10:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m. in McCormick Place Room S101b. Anyone planning to take the ABOS Part 1 or Part 2 certifying exam in the near future should be sure to attend.

Stop by the ABOS booth
Visit the ABOS booth, located in Academy Hall B of McCormick Place North, to talk with ABOS representatives and receive information about your MOC requirements, based on your certificate’s expiration year. The booth will be staffed according to the following schedule:

  • Wednesday through Friday, 7:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m.

Visit the AAOS Resource Center Theater
Also located in Academy Hall B is the AAOS Resource Center Theater, which offers a wealth of information about MOC, including two informational sessions.

One of these sessions—“AAOS Learning Portfolio: Helping You Manage the MOC Process”—explores the AAOS Learning Portfolio, a free member benefit that enables AAOS members to keep track of their CME credits throughout the MOC process. Jim Ogle, AAOS director of information services and member & customer relations, will present the session today at 11:45 a.m.; the presentation will be repeated tomorrow at 11:45 a.m. and on Thursday at 3:45 p.m.

“Making Sense of MOC” will be also offered at the Resource Center Theater, with Dr. Hurwitz on hand to present the latest information about MOC and answer questions about the MOC process. “Making Sense of MOC” takes place Wednesday at 1:15 p.m., Thursday at 3:15 p.m., and Friday at 2:15 p.m.

FDA Statement
Some drugs or medical devices demonstrated at the Annual Meeting have been cleared by the FDA for specific purposes only or have not been cleared by the FDA. The FDA has stated that it is the responsibility of the physician to determine the FDA clearance status of each drug or medical devices he or she wishes to use in clinical practice. Academy policy provides that “off label” uses of a drug or medical device may be described in the Academy’s CME activities so long as the “off label” use of the drug or medical device is also specifically disclosed (ie, it must be disclosed that the FDA has not cleared the drug or device for the described purpose). Any drug or medical device is being used “off label” if the described use is not set forth on the product’s approval label.
