Tips for Staying Out of Trouble

In “The Music Man,” Professor Harold Hill warned the inhabitants of River City that the opening of a pool hall spelled trouble—“with a capital T!” Seven years ago, when the AAOS Professional Compliance Program went into effect, it also spelled trouble—but only for those fellows who violate any of the Standards of Professionalism.

Tomorrow morning at 8:00 a.m. in Room S406 at McCormick Place, members of the AAOS Committee on Professionalism, Judiciary Committee, and a representative of the Board of Directors will provide tips for staying out of trouble under the Professional Compliance Program.

The symposium will also provide a peek into the thought processes and investigations used to determine whether a violation has occurred and what action may be taken as a result. Because the Judiciary Committee reviews members’ state medical license sanctions, the panelist from that committee will examine the “domino effect” that can occur based on a state medical board licensure decision and how these medical board actions may affect membership in AAOS.

In addition, guest presenter Gary D. Carr, MD, will examine the issues behind the most troubling cases—those involving a physician who may be struggling with addiction, alcoholism, or other illnesses.

Symposium J, “How Orthopaedic Surgeons Get Into Trouble: Lessons from the AAOS Compliance Program—A Case-Based Symposium,” will be webcast live and available for download beginning at 8:00 a.m. on Friday morning, through the close of the meeting. For more information, visit www.aaos.org/annual
