Altick awarded honorary membership

During the 2007 Annual Meeting, Leslie Altick, the first lay member of the AAOS Board of Directors, was presented with the highest honor the Academy can bestow on a nonmember: She was made an Honorary Member of the AAOS.

Ms. Altick, an executive vice president at Wells Fargo Bank, had served on the AAOS Board of Directors since 2002. In presenting the Certificate of Honorary Membership, Richard F. Kyle, MD, 2006-2007 AAOS president, said, “Leslie’s contributions and influence affected every Academy leader. She brought us the perspective of a patient and always kept us grounded. Her experience and knowledge of finance and fiscal responsibility kept us on the right track.”

Ms. Altick was key, according to Dr. Kyle, in initiating the new branding project and she “taught us the importance of having a valued and respected brand.”

In accepting the award, Ms. Altick acknowledged that working with the AAOS was a “rare privilege” and a “rewarding experience.” She thanked the Board for being open and willing to listen to the perspective of a lay member.

“Jim Herndon (James H. Herndon, MD, 2002-2003 AAOS president) always said, ‘we’re the nice surgeons,’” she laughed. “Truer words were never spoken.”
