AAOS, ASBMR sponsor osteoporosis meeting

The AAOS is partnering with the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR) to cosponsor a meeting on “Targeting Bone Remodeling for the Treatment of Osteoporosis,” Dec. 5-6, 2007, at the Omni Shoreham in Washington, D.C.

This meeting will explore evolving approaches and innovations that target bone remodeling and show promise for improving the treatment of osteoporosis. Updated program information may be found on the ASBMR Web site at www.asbmr.org.

AOA announces joint meeting
The American Orthopaedic Association (AOA) will hold a combined meeting with the Canadian Orthopaedic Association, June 4-7, 2008, in Quebec City, Canada. The meeting Web site is now live and provides access to important information about the combined meeting.

As the meeting draws nearer, you’ll be able to register online, check hotel and travel information, view the program and speakers, and much more. The site will be regularly updated, so be sure to check it frequently.

AGS seeks Jahnigen proposals
The American Geriatrics Society (AGS) is currently seeking proposals for the 2008 Jahnigen Career Development Scholars program. The request for proposals is online at www.americangeriatrics.org

The 2-year awards are designed to support junior faculty (within 10 years of completing training) in the specialties of anesthesiology, emergency medicine, general surgery, gynecology, ophthalmology, orthopaedic surgery, otolaryngology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, thoracic surgery, and urology. Each grant provides 2-year support of $75,000 per year for salary and fringe benefits and/or the costs of doing research. Funding guidelines from the supporting foundations require that each scholar’s institution provide a minimum match of $25,000 per year.

OTA issues call for abstracts
The Orthopaedic Trauma Association (OTA) has issued a call for abstracts for its 2008 annual meeting, which will be held Oct. 15-18, 2008, in Denver. Abstract applications will be accepted online beginning Nov. 15, 2007; the deadline for submitting your abstract for consideration is Feb. 5, 2008.

ORS advance registration now open
Registration for the 54th Annual Meeting of the Orthopaedic Research Society (ORS) is now open. The meeting will be held March 2-5, 2008, at the Moscone West Convention Center in San Francisco.

You can preregister online or download and print the preregistration form to fax or mail with your payment to the ORS office. The preregistration deadline date for fax and mail-in registrations is Jan. 23, 2008.

Late online registration will open on Jan. 24, 2008, and close on Feb. 19, 2008. For more information, visit the ORS Web site, www.ors.org

ORS seeks award applications, nominations
The ORS Special Projects Committee is soliciting nominations and applications for the following prestigious awards:

  • The William Harris Award
  • The Marshall Urist Award
  • Career Development Fellowship

IBMS seeks fellowship applicants
The International Bone & Mineral Society (IBMS) has issued a call for applications for the 2008 Gideon and Sevgi Rodan IBMS Fellowship.

The Fellowship is given annually to support the research activities of a deserving young investigator in the bone field. Support will be a $40,000 grant payable to the successful applicant’s institution. The research may be basic, translational, clinical, or outcomes-based in bone biology or diseases of the bone.

Applicants must be within 10 years of their first postgraduate degree (MD, PhD, DDS, or equivalent) and be a postdoctoral fellow. The fellowship must be held in an academic institution—for example, a medical school, hospital, or research institute.

ASSH introduces new products
The American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH) is introducing several new products, including Hand Surgery Update 4: Book & DVD, edited by Thomas Trumble, MD, and Jeffrey Budoff, MD. This entirely new volume addresses topics ranging from microsurgery to shoulder arthroscopy and includes critical features of the important hand and upper extremity surgery knowledge base. The chapters and annotated bibliographies are written by authorities in the field and are organized to highlight the essentials—as well as recent developments—related to advances in upper extremity surgical care. A DVD companion features more than 50 videos detailing specific techniques referenced in the text.

Apply now for 2009 ABC Fellowship
Continuing the tradition of the prestigious American British and Canadian (ABC) Exchange Traveling Fellowship, the American Orthopaedic Association (AOA) is seeking orthopaedic leaders to represent it during the 2009 ABC Traveling Fellowship to the United Kingdom and South Africa.

CSRS plans premeeting ICL
The Cervical Spine Research Society (CSRS) will hold an Instructional Course on “Controversies, Complicated Cases, and Complications,” Nov 28, 2007. Program chairs for the course are K. Daniel Riew, MD, and Jeffrey C. Wang, MD; participants may earn 7.5 hours of CME credit.
