CSRS plans premeeting ICL
The Cervical Spine Research Society (CSRS) will hold an Instructional Course on “Controversies, Complicated Cases, and Complications,” Nov 28, 2007. Program chairs for the course are K. Daniel Riew, MD, and Jeffrey C. Wang, MD; participants may earn 7.5 hours of CME credit.
The course immediately precedes the CSRS annual meeting, which runs Nov. 29 through Dec. 1, 2007, under the direction of scientific program chair Todd J. Albert, MD. Both events take place at The Palace Hotel in San Francisco. For more information, visit the CSRS Web site, www.csrs.org.
Watch for JRGOS supplement with September JAAOS
The inaugural meeting of the J. Robert Gladden Orthopaedic Society, “Perspectives in Orthopaedic Professionalism, Diversity and Health Disparities,” addressed the need for a more diverse orthopaedic work force and ways orthopaedic surgeons can better serve their diverse patient populations, with the goal to eliminate healthcare disparities and enhance quality of life for all U.S. residents.
A supplement to the September Journal of the AAOS (JAAOS) brings this symposium to you. Reading it can deepen your understanding of the issues and solutions proposed by a collection of renowned orthopaedic and diversity experts. Presentations and research on musculoskeletal health disparities, causes of health disparities, ways to eliminate health disparities, improving provider diversity, culturally competent care education, and public policy are included.
OTA to hold 23rd annual meeting
Jeffrey O. Anglen, MD, president of the Orthopaedic Trauma Association (OTA), welcomes attendees to the OTA’s 23rd annual meeting, Oct. 18-20, 2007, in Boston. Up to 21 CME credit hours will be available to attendees.
Andrew H. Schmidt, MD, is chair; William M. Ricci, MD, is co-chair. On Oct. 17, the day before the meeting, a Basic Science Focus Forum directed by Theodore Miclau III, MD, a Masters Level Trauma Coding Course chaired by William R. Creevy, MD, and a Disaster and Mass Casualty Management Session chaired by Christopher T. Born, MD, will be held. All sessions will be held at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston with Paul Tornetta III, MD as local host. Online registration is available at www.ota.org/.
Register now for RJOS meeting
The Ruth Jackson Orthopaedic Society (RJOS) will hold its 8th Biennial Meeting Oct. 5-7, 2007, at the Westin Crown Center in Kansas City, Mo. The theme of the meeting will be Successful Practices, Successful Practice.
A special preconference session on Strategies 4 Success 4 Women in Orthopaedics will be presented on Oct. 4. Dr. Bonnie Simpson-Mason, of Nth Dimensions Educational Solutions, Inc., will be the featured presenter. RJOS announces grant opportunities
The Ruth Jackson Orthopaedic Society (RJOS) announces a number of grant opportunities for medical students, residents, and RJOS members. Information and application materials can be found on the RJOS Web site, www.rjos.org. The application deadline for all of the following awards is Oct. 1, 2007:
- Jacqueline Perry, MD Resident Research Award
- RJOS Medical Student Scholarship
- Dr. Alexandra Kirkley and RJOS Traveling Fellowships
- RJOS/Zimmer Grants
In addition, RJOS members are encouraged to apply for the Zimmer Orthopaedic Career Development Award and/or the RJOS/Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF)/DePuy Career Development Award in Women’s Musculoskeletal Health, both of which also have an Oct. 1 deadline. Register now for ORS combined meeting
The 6th Combined Meeting of the Orthopaedic Research Societies (ORS) will take place Oct. 20-24, 2007, at the Hawaii Convention Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. Online registration is now open at the ORS Web site at www.ors.org. The preregistration deadline is Sept. 18; late online-only registration will be open Sept. 19–Oct. 11, 2007.
ABJS, CORR call for entries
The Association of Bone and Joint Surgeons (ABJS), in conjunction with Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research (CORR), has issued a call for papers for the Nicolas Andry Award and the Marshall R. Urist Young Investigator Award.
The Nicolas Andry Award of $15,000 is presented to an experienced orthopaedic investigator, including surgeons, who is doing clinically relevant basic or patient-oriented research. The submission should review a body of work conducted and published over an extended period that deals with the musculoskeletal system and has significantly contributed to orthopaedic knowledge and practice. Bodies of work that in substance have received previous awards are not eligible. The body of the text should not exceed 20 pages.
The Marshall R. Urist Young Investigator Award of $5,000 is presented to orthopaedic surgeon investigators younger than 40 years old or with less than 7 years posttraining (including fellowships) at the time of application. Submitted work must deal with clinically relevant laboratory or clinical research. The research may not have won an award or have been previously published as a full paper. The body of the text should not exceed 10 pages.

To complete submissions, a precise statement of the principal investigator’s role in the submitted work and a current curriculum vitae must be submitted to abjs@aaos.org.
Winning papers must be presented at the 2008 annual meeting of the ABJS, June 13-17, in Jackson Hole, Wyo. Winning manuscripts will be automatically considered as a submission to CORR. The absolute deadline for submission is Nov. 1, 2007.
