OREF Grant Applications Due Soon

Extended Deadline for the OREF/Zimmer Orthopaedic Career Development Award
Current and pending minority members of the J. Robert Gladden Society may submit applications through February 1, 2008 for Career Development Awards. The $50,000 awards are designed to advance the scientific and/or clinical training of new orthopaedic surgeons who have an interest in total joint surgery and/or trauma treatment.

The candidate and the sponsoring institution will develop the specific training and/or research plan. Awards include, but are not limited to
• Support for an individual receiving training or pursuing investigation,
• Support for travel that furthers training or investigation, or
• Support to provide for special resources required to advance training or investigation.

Minority members and candidate members of the J. Robert Gladden Society who are currently completing formal orthopaedic surgical training, enrolled in advanced surgical training, or who have recently completed formal training are qualified to apply for these awards provided by an educational grant from Zimmer. (Candidates who took a sabbatical or leave of absence early in their careers will also be considered on a case-by-case basis.)

Applications for the OREF/AAHKS/Zimmer Resident Clinician Scientist Training Grant in Total Joint Arthroplasty are due January 15.
AAHKS and OREF will award a Resident Clinician Scientist Training Grant to residents (or fellows completing an orthopaedic fellowship) in approved orthopaedic programs who:
• Want to prepare for a career with research in total joint arthroplasty as a major component.
• Have a mentor who is an active or candidate member of AAHKS.
• Can dedicate at least three to six months to research time (six months is the preferred minimum) between April 1, 2008 and March 31, 2009.

Zimmer will provide an educational grant to fund this $21,500, one-year grant, which provides $20,000 for research expenses (but not salary) plus a $1,500 travel stipend. The recipient will be required to attend the 2008 AAHKS Annual Meeting to present an interim report on his or her project; the travel stipend compensates time and expenses.

Practice Tips

Real world tips for a more successful practice
By Steven E. Fisher, MBA

Symposium serves up healthy slice of business acumen

Conventional wisdom once held that the three “As”—ability, affability, and availability—were enough to guarantee a successful medical practice. According to the most recent AAOS census, however, less than 1 percent of AAOS members have that MBA degree. Read the complete article in AAOS Now
