Learn More About the AAOS Through the Resident Engagement Program.
The Academy has initiated the Resident Engagement Program (REP) which is aimed at providing all orthopaedic residents with information about the Academy and what it has to offer. The goal is to ensure that all residents become aware of all the programs and activities the AAOS does on behalf of residents in specific and orthopaedic surgeons in general. These include: jobs for residents, CME to practice management to legislative advocacy in support of issues such as Medicare reimbursement. The information provided through the REP is a presentation made by an Academy leader as apart of a “Grand Round.” If you are interested in having a REP presentation at your program, contact Jennifer Shapiro, the REP Coordinator, at shapiro@aaos.org.

Leave a Legacy to the Children of San Francisco!
On Tuesday, March 4, 2008 (the day before the 75th Anniversary Annual Meeting kicks off), you can be part of a true makeover that will rival any renovation you might see on a reality TV show. In just one day, orthopaedic surgeons and their families, orthopaedic nurses, our industry partners, orthopaedic state and specialty society members, Academy staff, related organizations and community volunteers will work collectively to convert an empty piece of land into a child’s dream playground. Not just any playground, a 6000+ square foot playground where children with and without disabilities can play together.
Our 2008 site, Balboa Park, in San Francisco serves one of the most diverse, needy and family-centered areas in the city!
Why Balboa Park?
- The Balboa Park district is fourth out of 26 San Francisco districts for number
of children in poverty.
- The District that Balboa Park serves has the largest population of any district
in the San Francisco area and has the second highest percentage of children
within a district.
- 53% of the children have no access to green space.
- The neighborhood is diverse, serving African American, Hispanic, Asian, Pacific
Islander, Caucasian and other ethnicities.
Energized by great music, delicious food and the get-up-and-go attitude of every volunteer, we will assemble the playground equipment under the direction and supervision of special project managers – no experience is necessary! We also have side projects including building picnic tables, benches, planters, sanding, painting and helping the neighborhood children with their activities that will keep our volunteers busy all day!
Buses will come and go from the Moscone Convention Center regularly throughout the day, and food and beverages will be provided at the site. The day will culminate with a special ribbon-cutting ceremony, attended by government officials, partners and the media.
What brings our builders back year after year? Seeing smiles on the children’s faces at the end of the day, and knowing our playground will be a place they can make friends and create memories for a lifetime.
To join us March 4, 2008, please contact Pat Julitz by phone, 847-384-4036 or email.
