Interested in international orthopaedics? Consider joining SICOT
By Matt Zuleg and Aimee Spellman
The advances in orthopaedics are not limited to the United States. International studies and researchers offer both different perspectives and cutting-edge research. In orthopaedics—as in politics, economics, and many other fields—it pays to know what’s happening internationally as well as locally.
AAOS members can get that international perspective as members of SICOT—the International Society of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology. SICOT’s mission is to promote the advancement of science and the art of orthopaedics and traumatology at the international level, particularly through its multi-national publications, triennial world congress, and annual international meeting.
Established in Paris in 1929, SICOT is currently headquartered in Belgium. More than 110 countries are represented. SICOT USA sponsors an open luncheon at the AAOS Annual Meeting for all members.
In addition, SICOT USA provides access to several international orthopaedic societies and aid agencies, including the World Health Organization, the World Orthopaedic Concern, and the International Research Society for Orthopaedics and Traumatology. American surgeons can use this opportunity to gain access to new cultures and ideas or to provide care in less developed countries. Members can participate at educational centers located in several developing countries as well as through the Telediagnostics Project, which provides online consultations. Join a tradition of rich and exciting exchange of orthopaedic knowledge at an international level. Call (847) 698-1627 or e-mail spellman@aaos.or g for membership information.
Meetings -
In 2009, SICOT celebrated its 80th anniversary in Pattaya, Thailand and recently held their 2010 meeting in Sweden.
From September 6-9, 2011, SICOT will hold its XXV Triennial World Congress in Prague, Czech Republic. “Our main goal is to create a Scientific Programme covering all aspects of orthopaedic surgery and traumatology. We will invite the most influential current speakers to Prague and feature the most exciting topics of our time. An emphasis will be put on sharing information between East and West, as Prague appears to be, thanks to its location, ideal for this task,” writes Prof Tomáš Trc, SICOT Congress President. For more information on this meeting, please email congress@sicot.org or visit the Website: www.sicot.org for regularly updated information.

Help AAOS Builds its Family Fitness and Fun Park in San Diego!
Join us in San Diego, Calif., on Tuesday, February 15—the day the 2011 Annual Meeting begins. The Family Fitness and Fun Park will provide children, parents and grandparents the opportunity for physical activity together. There will be different exercise stations with descriptions that explain the importance of balance, flexibility, strength, how to do those exercises properly, and provide injury prevention tips. In the middle of the Park will be a safe, accessible playground where children, with and without disabilities, can play safely together. The perimeter of the Park will include a walking/running track for aerobic exercise to help reduce and prevent falls, build strong bones and give those recovering from joint replacement a safe place to exercise. This is truly a place where three generations of families can get fit and have fun together.
It will be a fantastic day of building with fellow orthopaedic surgeons, allied health, orthopaedic industry, and of course, San Diego community volunteers.
For more information, to volunteer, and to see a concept image, please visit the Web site at www.aaos.org/fitnessbuild.
If you have any questions, please contact Kayee Ip, public relations specialist, by phone, 847-384-4035, or email, ip@aaos.org.

Practice Tips
Five issues to consider before signing on the dotted line
Faced with shrinking reimbursement rates for their professional and ancillary services and increasing administrative, regulatory, and technological burdens, many physicians in private practice are considering selling their practices to and becoming employees of a hospital or health system.
Although selling your practice to a hospital may make a lot of sense for a variety of reasons, you and your legal counsel should evaluate the following considerations before making the decision. And, if you do decide to sell, carefully structure the transaction so that you have an “out” if expectations on either side are not met. Read the complete article in AAOS Now.
