HOT TOPIC: ABOS Part 1 Certifying Exam
A message from Shep Hurwitz, MD, ABOS Director: PGY-5 orthopaedic residents may go the ABOS website and create an account for the application to the part I certifying exam in 2012. The deadline for this application is December 15, 2011. A 3 week late period follows the December deadline, which carries an additional $350 fee. The absolute, no excuse, application deadline is January 6, 2012. Residents who miss the January deadline will not be allowed to take an exam in 2012. Graduating orthopaedic residents are not Board Eligible until they pass the part I exam.

HOT TOPIC: 22 Orthopaedic Specialty Societies
The AAOS Board of Specialty Societies (BOS) wants you to know about the 22 orthopaedic specialty societies. These societies are an excellent resource for orthopaedic specialty-specific information. Contact the societies that interest you to learn more about their membership opportunities, products, services, and year-round educational offerings.
In future newsletters, the BOS will feature a “specialty society in the spotlight,” a series that will highlight one society each month.
The BOS provides a forum for the 22 specialty societies to address issues of mutual concern and to advise the AAOS Board of Directors on advocacy, education, and research issues. The BOS provides opportunities for shared leadership and governance, organizational benchmarking, collaborative program development, and communication between organizations. For more information about the BOS, visit the BOS website or contact with Jennifer Jones by email or 847.384.4236.

HOT TOPIC: HVO Orthopaedics Traveling Fellowships
Applications for 2011-2012 HVO Orthopaedics Traveling Fellowships are being accepted. This Fellowship will provide funding for a final year orthopaedic resident to volunteer at an active HVO orthopaedic project for a period of four weeks. Three fellowships are available in 2011 and 2012. These fellowships are genersously supported by Dean & Catherine Matsuda, Paul Muchnic, MD and the SICOT Foundation.
The successful applicant will be exposed to a wide range of surgical pathologies not commonly seen in the United States. He/she will learn to communicate effectively with people from different cultures and will be exposed to the realities and constraints of delivering health care in a resource-scarce environment. The HVO Traveling Fellow will be challenged to be flexible, to adapt to different circumstances, and to hone their decision-making skills. The fellow will be asked to submit a report within one month of returning home.
Applicants must be US citizens presently training in an ACGME-recognized orthopaedic training program. Funding will be available to defray expenses related to airfare and lodging, as well as food and incidentals. Interested applicants should send the following documents (in MS Word or PDF format):
- One page letter highlighting previous experience and motivation for seeking this fellowship
- Current CV
- Letter of support from the director of residency program. This letter should address the applicant’s suitability for this fellowship (ability to teach, be flexible, etc) and also the applicant’s ability to have a minimum of four weeks to participate.
Applications should be addressed to Nancy Kelly, HVO Executive Director, and sent to info@hvousa.org. Please reference the “HVO Orthopaedics Traveling Fellowship” in the subject line. Electronic submission is required.

AAOS Now Seeks Resident Contributors
Orthopaedic residents are invited to submit articles to the AAOS member publication, AAOS Now. Let AAOS Now know about your research, unique features of your residency program, or your involvement in advocacy, research, or “outside the office” activities.
Have you encountered a challenging case? Present it to AAOS Now readers as a “What’s your diagnosis?” item. Email two or three images and a description to AAOS Now.
Residents are also welcome to “sound off” about issues of concern—from workplace violence or work-hour standards to healthcare reform and the future your see for yourself in practice. “Sound-off” columns are generally no more than 1200 words and express solely the views of the author.
If you have an idea but need help working it out, contact Mary Ann Porucznik, managing editor. She can work with you or assign a writer to help you flesh out your ideas. Email her at porucznik@aaos.org
