Specialty Society in the Spotlight

Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America (POSNA)

Mission: To assure the best possible care of children with musculoskeletal disorders by implementing the highest quality education of pediatric orthopaedists, by supporting evidence-based research, and by developing appropriate alliances with related organizations

“Pediatric orthopedic surgery has always provided a unique and stimulating career in clinical practice and academic research for residency graduates. The diversity of age, anatomy, and broad array of challenging musculoskeletal diseases leaves little room for monotony. More recently, sub-specialization has exploded in pediatric and adolescent musculoskeletal training, offering in depth careers in sports medicine, hip, hand and upper extremity, and spinal disorders. In addition, the molecular study of the genetic basis of disease is changing the scientific face of care for children. The future is bright for pediatric orthopedic surgery.”  Peter M. Waters, MD-POSNA President

Resident Education Opportunities:
POSNA Annual Meeting: The 2012 meeting will be held in Denver, Colorado-May 17-19. A wide variety of pediatric musculoskeletal disorders will be presented and discussed in over 95 podium presentations, 20 posters and 75 e-posters. Residents may attend the annual meeting at a reduced registration rate.

In addition, the registration rate is reduced for residents.
POSNA Specialty Day: February 11, 2012-San Francisco, CA. Specialty Day is a day set aside during the AAOS Annual Meeting for scientific programs presented by organizations that are members of the Board of Specialty Societies (BOS). POSNA offers a reduced registration rate for residents.

Mentoring Opportunities: on-site mentoring is available at the IPOS meeting in Orlando.  Interested residents are paired with an IPOS faculty member throughout the four day course. It’s a unique opportunity to meet with and receive guidance on career plans from POSNA members.  A symposium on Career Planning and Professional Development for Orthopaedic Residents and Fellows is planned for 2011. This session will discuss issues affecting residents entering a fellowship, including “How to Make the Most of your Fellowship,” and “How to Find your First Job.”

Newsletters: The first edition of the POSNA Resident Review came out in January 2009.
This biannual publication was developed to provide education and exposure to pediatric orthopaedics. Educational materials in the form of test questions are developed by the editorial board. Apply to attend the 2012 AAOS/ORS Femoroacetabular Impingement (FAI) Research Symposium as a Young Investigator!
The AAOS is sponsoring five (5) Young Investigator participants to attend the 2012 AAOS/ORS Femoroacetabular Impingement Research Symposium, May 9-11, 2012, in Chicago, Illinois. Young Investigator applicants must be no more than seven years beyond training. Selected applicants will receive airfare, lodging, and meals. All application materials must be received by December 15, 2011. Get more information and download an application here.

About the Symposium: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a leading cause of reduced quality of life and loss of function. Lower extremity OA is particularly common and costly. The number of total hip procedures is expected to increase by 200% over the next two decades. Innovative strategies are needed to more effectively diagnose, prevent and treat OA. Future treatment innovations will focus on early detection of disease and interventions to prevent or halt disease progression and preserve the natural hip joint. Over the past decade there have been major advances in elucidating the pathophysiology of hip osteoarthritis. Most importantly, the profound etiological role of FAI has come to the forefront. The 2012 AAOS/ORS Femoroacetabular Impingement Research Symposium will emphasize a multidisciplinary approach and will focus on summarizing current knowledge, developing consensus and identifying research strategies for several key issues related to FAI.

Practice Tips

How likely are you to be sued?

By Alan Lembitz, MD

It’s not a question of whether, but when…and how to reduce your risk

Did you know that the cumulative likelihood of a physician in the highest risk specialties (neurosurgery, cardiothoracic surgery, general surgery, orthopaedic surgery, and plastic surgery) having a medical liability claim is 88 percent by age 45 and 99 percent by age 65? This is according to a recent study, based on research funded by the Rand Institute for Civil Justice and the National Institute on Aging, and published in the New England Journal of Medicine. The claims data came from nationwide data of a large professional liability company and included 40,916 physicians and 233,738 physician years, from all 50 states; the study is probably the largest and most comprehensive analysis of its kind.
