A message from Shep Hurwitz, MD, ABOS Director: PGY-5 orthopaedic residents may go the ABOS website and create an account for the application to the part I certifying exam in 2012. The deadline for this application is December 15, 2011. A three week late period follows the December deadline, which carries an additional $350 fee. The absolute, no excuse, application deadline is January 6, 2012. Residents who miss the January deadline will not be allowed to take an exam in 2012. Graduating orthopaedic residents are not Board Eligible until they pass the part I exam.

Increasing Interest on the Part of Residents in Hospital Employment
Merritt Hawkins, a national physician staffing company, recently published its annual Survey of Final-Year Medical Residents. The survey is available free of charge online (although registration is required). The survey covers a wide array of topics including number of job solicitations respondents received; their knowledge of business; the importance of various factors in choosing a practice location; and earnings expectations. Perhaps most interesting was a question that related to practice setting preferences. Nearly one in three residents who responded to the survey stated they would be most open to becoming a hospital employee, an increase of ten percentage points from 2008. 28% said they would be most open to becoming a member in a partnership. Only 10% said they were most open to becoming an employee in a single-specialty group. This is a thirteen percentage point decrease relative to 2008. Given that more and more graduate medical trainees are interested in affiliating with hospitals, residents will find value in reading an Academy primer entitled, “Hospital Employment of Orthopaedic Surgeons.” The publication is available on-line and member log-in is required. The primer covers subjects such as (a) the reasons physicians are seeking hospital employment, (b) reasons hospitals are seeking to employ orthopaedic surgeons, (c) types of hospital employment, (d) benefits and drawbacks, (e) legal considerations, and (f) tips for ensuring long-term success. Additional resources are provided at the end of the publication for those seeking more information. For more information, contact Matt Twetten Senior Manager Regulatory, Quality & Medical Affairs at AAOS.

Practice Tips
How to report services provided to your partner’s patient during the postoperative period
If a complication arises after surgery, prompt treatment is required. But if your partner, the orthopaedist who performed the surgery, is unavailable and you step in to provide the care, how should you report and code the service? To better appreciate how these services should be reported, you must first understand what is included in the global surgical package related to postoperative care.
