DO YOU KNOW THIS ABOUT THE AAOS?

The Academy's resident page now features a brochure highlighting information and benefits for residents. Additional information, including ABOS and OITE, National Resident Match Program, and the Practice Management Center is also located on the Residents' page.

The Resident Liaison Program
The Candidate, Resident and Fellow Committee has invited each orthopaedic residency program to appoint a resident liaison from their program.

This individual will periodically receive communications from the Academy concerning programs or activities that directly relate to their resident colleagues. They are asked to forward the information to their fellow residents and when appropriate, provide feedback to the Academy.

Each year at the Annual Meeting, the liaisons are invited to a resident liaison meeting to discuss current issues affecting residents.

Interested in becoming a Resident Liaison? Visit our Resident Liaison page to see if your program needs a liaison, and sign up today!

Washington Health Policy Fellowship Program
The AAOS Washington Health Policy Fellowship Program provides an outstanding opportunity for exceptional senior orthopaedic residents and fellows-in-training to take part in and understand federal health policy processes. Fellows actively contribute to the formulation of national health policies and accelerate their careers as leaders in health policy.

The program funds up to two orthopaedic residents per year and provides the opportunity to work in the legislative and regulatory arena for a multi-week period during a 12-month timeframe. While flexible, the fellowship requires a considerable time commitment. Attendance at some AAOS meetings, such as the National Orthopaedic Leadership
Conference, is required. The AAOS Office of Government Relations will work with the selected applicants to design a program that meets the fellows’ needs, interests and schedules.

The application deadline is February 1, 2012. Direct questions to Jeanie Kennedy, manager of regulatory and government relations in the Washington office, at (202) 546-4150 or kennedy@aaos.org.  Information and application materials are located here.

Practice Tips

You Have Been Sued - Part 2
David Teuscher, MD and Doug Lundy, MD

Negligence cases are won and lost on expert witness testimony. It gives the jury the scientific and factual basis for the “standard of care” and provides them with the information needed to determine whether that standard has been violated by an act of omission (something should have been done but wasn’t) or an act of commission (something should not have been done but was). In medical negligence cases, the defendant doctor has a strategic option, but only if the defense team employs it. Serve as your own best expert witness and consultant to your attorney.
