SPECIALTY IN THE SPOTLIGHT: American Association for Hand Surgery (AAHS)
500 Cummings Center, Ste 4550
Beverly, MA 01915
Phone: 978-927-8330
Email: contact@handsurgery.org
Website: http://www.handsurgery.org/
Summary of Society:
The American Association for Hand Surgery is an inclusive organization of over 1000 hand surgeons and hand therapists interested in hand and upper extremity care. The Association’s primary focus is education with emphasis on clinical concepts and technical aspects of hand care. Visit www.handsurgery.org to learn more about AAHS, its membership benefits, and the Association’s Annual Meetings and Awards.
Mission/Purpose:
The mission of the American Association for Hand Surgery is to foster and promote the highest quality of hand care through the development and sponsorship of educational programs related to the hand and the upper extremity, through communications with health care professionals and the public, and through the endowment of research.
Leadership Quote:
"The importance of the hand should never be understated as it represents truly an extension of our brain and personality. The discipline of hand surgery is a unique surgical specialty as one masters the repair or reconstruction of its many component parts which include soft tissue, muscle-tendon units, nerve, vascular, articulations, and the supporting skeleton. In addition, the hand surgeon is able to become involved in the care of all ages from congenital deformities to the older aged patient with osteoarthritis; deal with acute emergencies as well as exciting reconstructions of missing parts with microsurgery or composite hand transplantation." – Jesse B. Jupiter, MD, President
Resident Education Opportunities:
AAHS Annual Meeting: The American Association for Hand Surgery Annual Meeting brings together health care professionals from North America and abroad for a three-day continuing education program featuring the highest quality hand and upper extremity health care education. The program is multifaceted and includes almost 25 instructional courses, numerous panel discussions and case-based programs, and free papers selected by a panel of experts. The learner will gain insight into both common and complex problems of the upper extremity, understand indications for surgery, therapy, outcomes of each, and potential complications of intervention.
ASSH/AAHS Specialty Day: Specialty Day 2013 a one-day course that addresses both common and complex hand, wrist, and elbow problems with an unprecedented emphasis on surgical technique. Join leading experts from around the country as they invite you into their operating room and bring their “Master Techniques” to life through video demonstrations of over 40 operative procedures. 2013 Specialty Day will be held on March 23, 2013 in S105 at McCormick Place in Chicago, Illinois during the AAOS conference.
AAHS VuMedi Webinars: The Association and its leadership organize VuMedi webinars, which provide relevant hand care education while being a cost effective way to learn. AAHS’s most recent VuMedi webinar was “AAHS Presents…The Ulnar Neve” and new webinars are planned for spring 2013, including a program geared towards your surgeons on employment in hand surgery.
Publications/ Newsletters:
HAND (the official journal of the AAHS) is a quarterly multidisciplinary peer reviewed journal which publishes original clinical and basic science articles, comprehensive critical reviews and unique case reports related to the management of pathologies in the hand and upper extremity. Scholarship/Grant Information
AAHS Annual Research Grant ($10,000, annual grant)
The American Association for Hand Surgery awards Annual Research Grants to clinicians and therapists in private or academic practice for small clinical studies focused in hand care, or for pilot studies leading to a more major hand care study. Grant applications are judged not only on scientific merit, but also on whether the project can realistically be completed in 1 year and on the quality and practicality of the budget. All AAHS members and applicants for membership are eligible to apply. Non-member residents and fellows are also eligible with confirmation of appropriate AAHS member sponsorship.
1 award in the amount of $10,000 will be granted for a 1 year period. There may be up to 3 co-investigators; 1 of the investigators MUST be an Active or Affiliate AAHS member.
To view additional guidelines and to obtain an application, please visit our web site. The deadline for all AAHS Research Grant applications is November 1, 2012. Only electronic submissions will be accepted.

Projects submitted to the AAHS Annual Research Grant are eligible for submission to the AAHS/PSF Combined Pilot Research Grant, although a project will only be funded through one grant. The application deadline for the AAHS/PSF Combined Pilot Research Grant is December 3, 2012. To view instructions, visit our site.
Vargas International Hand Therapist Teaching Award (reimbursed for trip-related expenses up to $5,000)

HOT TOPIC: Is Ethics Important In Medicine?
Acting for the good of patients. This has become the central tenant of medical ethics. Every action and decision you make on behalf of a patient can pose a serious medical dilemma. Dr. James Capozzi, in his lecture, “Ethical Considerations in Orthopaedic Surgery,” explains the goals of medicine and how these frequently give rise to ethical dilemmas. Through clinical cases, he develops a framework to help you approach these situations. This is one of the 22 lectures available to residency programs that subscribe to the Resident Practice Management Lecture Series. These 20-30 minute audio/slide lectures are ideal for group discussions and also for independent study on your mobile device. Ask your Residency Program Director to subscribe today!

PLEASE NOTE: This symposium focuses on issues uniquely relevant to the practice of orthopaedic surgery in the United States. For this reason, registration for the symposium is restricted to orthopaedic residents living in the United States.
