AAHKS Mentoring Opportunities:
Interested in Becoming an AAHKS Resident Mentee or Fellow Mentor in 2013?
The inaugural AAHKS Resident Mentor Program kicked off in July 2012.  The Program is designed to place a Resident in contact with an AAHKS Fellow Member who will be available as a resource for a variety of reasons. The intention is not to replace a Resident’s Mentor within their program, but to be an additional resource for Residents.
The current program runs from July 2012 thru June 2013, to coincide with the Resident’s schedule.  The next application process will open in January 2013 and close in June 2013, in time for the Resident – Fellow matches to take place for the July 2013 Mentor Program.  The Fellow Member and Resident will be part of the program for a period of one year.
Mentees:  We are looking for AAHKS Resident Members (or Resident non-members wishing to become members) interested in the program.  Orthopaedic Residents attribute their choice of a Fellowship specialty to role models and Mentors in the field.
Mentors:  We are looking for AAHKS Fellow Members to volunteer to be Mentors.  This program is a chance to actively recruit Residents into our field.  The goal of the program is to give you an opportunity to work with and positively influence Residents.
For additional information or if you are interested in becoming a Mentee or Mentor, please contact Krista Stewart, Membership and Coding Specialist, via eMail krista@aahks.org or by telephone at (847) 384-4376.

Additional information about AAHKS Membership, resident applications, and Fellowship Match can be found on the AAHKS website.

If you rely on your income, you do!

By Nicole Dierking

As an orthopaedic surgeon, you see the impact of disabling injuries every day. Although you do your best to repair limbs mangled in motor vehicle accidents or by falls and trauma, you know that recovery can sometimes take months, even years. Consider these facts:

  • According to the National Safety Council, a disabling injury occurs nearly every second in the United States.
  • Nearly one in five Americans—54 million people—is classified as disabled, based on U.S. Census Bureau information. continue reading this AAOS Now article...
