DO YOU KNOW THIS ABOUT THE AAOS?

Over a thousand residents attended the Annual Meeting in San Francisco. Dr. Nathan Skelley, Resident Liaison from Washington University, has put together an overview of the 2012 Annual Meeting in San Francisco, and the Resident Liaison Meeting.

The AAOS conducted a very busy and successful meeting this year at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, California. Dr. John Tongue became the new President of the AAOS and announced several advances in the "Decide to Drive" initiative. The AAOS also announced public health initiatives related to obesity, overuse injuries, and lessons learned in wartime. Orthopaedic residents continued to have a strong presence at the meeting through research presentations, job interviews, and volunteer events. There were also several courses designed specifically for residents based on common topics in orthopaedics, research opportunities, and practice management strategies.

Orthopaedic programs throughout the country are encouraged to send a resident to the annual meeting, as a Resident Liaison, in order to help facilitate communication between residency programs and the AAOS. The Resident Liaisons met during the meeting to discuss numerous topics affecting residents-in-training. Dr. Milbrandt oversees the Resident Liaison program and invited several guest speakers to the meeting. Dr. Cannada spoke about changes in the fellowship application process. These changes included the development of a new Code of Conduct for the fellowship application, a program non-compete notification, and the potential creation of one "Match Day" for fellowship selection similar to the residency Match Day. Unlike residency interviews, however, fellowship interviews would continue to occur at different times throughout the year for the various fellowship specialties. Dr Carroll, from the Ethics Committee, spoke about ethics education in orthopaedics. The committee has created several orthopaedic focused vignettes on ethics on the OrthoPortal. These vignettes can be used by residency programs to facilitate ethics education.

Dr. Mandell, from the Council on Advocacy, spoke about several important policy issues affecting orthopaedic residents.  Residency work hours continue to be an important topic. Few residents, however, were aware of potential government budget cuts that could decrease or eliminate GME funding for residency training. The AAOS has one of the largest Political Action Committees in medicine which is working on behalf of residents, but they continue to need donations and support for their various activities.

The AAOS Annual meeting was packed with educational courses, volunteer events, industry news, and policy initiatives. Residents are encouraged to take an active role in these activities. We look forward to seeing more residents at the 2013 meeting in Chicago, Illinois.

SPECIALTY IN THE SPOTLIGHT: ORA

Orthopedic Rehabilitation Association

President:  Robin C. Crandall, M.D.
rcrandall50@gmail.com
Secretary/Treasurer:  Byron Marsolais, M.D., PhD
ebmzzz@aol.com
Executive Director:  Debbie Finch
763-957-5310
debfinch@tcomn.com

Summary of Society:  The Orthopedic Rehabilitation Association (ORA) is a group of orthopedic surgeons who believe that the only way to achieve optimal post surgical musculoskeletal function is for the surgeon to be actively involved with all aspects of the patient’s rehabilitation.  The primarily surgical relationship coupled with direct application of all rehabilitative aspects of musculoskeletal medicine often results in future surgical procedure modifications.  Changes in one body part may result in profound unexpected effects elsewhere.  Further discussion of our fundamentals is found on our site.

The mission of the Orthopaedic Rehabilitation Association is to promote high standards of patient care to improve the functional outcome of persons with musculoskeletal disabilities. Education and research are the cornerstones of these efforts and enable us to continually progress in our efforts to advocate on behalf of our patients.

Resident educational opportunities include the annual meeting at the AAOS with emphasis on Specialty Day. The ORA also participates with the Association of Children’s Prosthetic-Orthotic Clinics (ACPOC) for symposium creation and collaboration.

Educational awards are available including the Jacquelin Perry and the Vernon Nickel awards. These awards are given generally at the AAOS Annual Meeting or the ORA Annual Meeting with ACPOC.  Membership in the Orthopedic Rehabilitation Association is highly recommended for orthopedic surgeons who have an active interest in rehabilitative medicine or rehabilitation of their post surgical orthopedic patients.  Details of dues and benefits can be seen on our web site

Some milestones of rehabilitation our members pioneered include the Halo for spinal stability, Functional Electrical Stimulation to restore active movement and post stroke/head injury surgery to regain function.

Hot Topic: Fundamentals of Knee and Shoulder Arthroscopy – Strictly for Orthopaedic Residents!
Join us for a brand new surgical skills course that provides orthopaedic residents with the skills necessary to become proficient at knee and shoulder arthroscopy procedures. Each pair of residents will spend the vast majority of the course working on their own knee and shoulder specimens in the learning center, to build confidence and skill in arthroscopic techniques.

Directed by Andrew J. Cosgarea, MD, and Jon K. Sekiya, MD, the AAOS/AOSSM Fundamentals of Knee and Shoulder Arthroscopy for Orthopaedic Residents course starts Friday evening, September 14, and runs through Sunday afternoon, September 16, at the Orthopaedic Learning Center in Rosemont, IL.

Each session begins with a brief lecture outlining O/R set up, equipment, procedural sequence, and pitfalls to avoid. Gain exposure to and learn the intricacies of ACL reconstruction, rotator cuff repair, and labral repair. The course will help you become proficient in diagnostic knee and shoulder arthroscopy procedures, and gain the skills base necessary for other procedures including partial meniscectomy, meniscus repair, subacromial decompression, and biceps tenotomy.

Registration is open to residents and post-resident fellows for the low rate of only $750! This course is not open to other member categories or non-members. For more information or to register for the course, call AAOS Customer Service toll-free at 1-800-626-6726 or go online.

Competent Clinician, but will you be Knowledgeable in Business Matters too?
The AAOS Practice Management Committee (PMC) understands that you will need resources to become equally competent in business matters.  Members of the PMC have reviewed 30 books on an array of subjects that affect your financial and personal future.   Available at discount prices to residents and residency programs, these books are an ideal way to start a library of practice management resources.

Time management skills are critical in all areas of a doctor’s life.  Here’s an excerpt from one of the books the PMC reviewed:   “Take Back Time. Bringing Time Management to Medicine,” by Judy Capko, 2008.

Take Back Time is a little book with a big purpose – to help you master time.  It’s not about cramming as much as you can into each day; it’s about feeling good at the end of the day, knowing you made the best use of your time.  It is an exploration of daily life in the healthcare arena, taking a look at the things that disrupt our time or make it nearly impossible to stay on time.  My hope is that you will learn new ways to capture time and increase your own sense of fulfillment, both on and off the job.” (Introduction, p. 4) Instructions for ordering this book, and a complete list of practice management books offered at discount prices.

Philadelphia Region
University of Pennsylvania
JUNE 8: poster competition
JUNE 9: symposium

Pacific Coast Region

Practice Tips

Physicians, Patients Share Responsibility for Treatment
Changing times require changes in attitude, approach S. Jay Jayasankar, MD

Years ago, a patient in his 50s walked into my office without a prior appointment. He complained of neck and arm pain that had resulted from a fall a few days earlier. It was obvious from observation that he had a neurologic impairment. My concern was the most consequential differential diagnosis of an unstable cervical spine and cord/root injury.
