DO YOU KNOW THIS ABOUT THE AAOS?
The AAOS Ethics Committee has created "Resident Ethics Series: Issues and Scenarios for Discussion and Guidance." to provide orthopaedic surgery residency programs with discussion material to use in training programs across the country. The discussion scenarios are designed to stimulate discussion via changing scenarios and familiarize the surgeon with guidelines, legalities, and resources to utilize when considering ethical issues.**********

Summary of Society:
AOSSM’s focus on sports medicine education and research stems from the commitment of its members to understand and treat athletic injuries across all age groups and skill levels.
Mission/Purpose:
Formed primarily as a forum for education and research, the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine has increased its membership from its modest start of less than 100 to nearly 3,000 today.
AOSSM members are physicians and allied health professionals who demonstrate scientific leadership, involvement and dedication in the daily practice of sports medicine. Members must demonstrate continuing active research and/or educational activities in the field of sports medicine. Such activities may include service as a team physician at any level of competition, educating persons involved with the health of athletes, service to local, regional, national and international competitions, and the presentation of scientific research papers at sports medicine meetings. The unifying interest of the membership is their concern with the effects of exercise and the monitoring of its impact on active individuals of all ages, abilities and levels of fitness. While many members treat high profile athletes who play on professional teams, many devote their practices to helping out their community and treating players on the local high school or junior college team.
Leadership Quote:
Striving to be the best at treating patients with athletic injuries requires a commitment to education, to your community, and dedication to lifelong learning. The camaraderie within our society helps foster the goals of our society and facilitates that commitment. My participation in AOSSM significantly enhances my orthopaedic experience and the enjoyment I get in clinic or in the OR. I think our Society fosters a collegial environment in which to improve. – Dan Solomon, MD

Hot Topic: Fundamentals of Knee and Shoulder Arthroscopy – Strictly for Orthopaedic Residents! Join us for a brand new surgical skills course that provides orthopaedic residents with the skills necessary to become proficient at knee and shoulder arthroscopy procedures. Each pair of residents will spend the vast majority of the course working on their own knee and shoulder specimens in the lab, to build confidence and skill in arthroscopic techniques.
Directed by Andrew J. Cosgarea, MD, and Jon K. Sekiya, MD, the AAOS/AOSSM Fundamentals of Knee and Shoulder Arthroscopy for Orthopaedic Residents course starts Friday evening, September 14, and runs through Sunday afternoon, September 16, at the Orthopaedic Learning Center in Rosemont, IL.
Each session begins with a brief lecture outlining O/R set up, equipment, procedural sequence, and pitfalls to avoid. Gain exposure to and learn the intricacies of ACL reconstruction, rotator cuff repair, and labral repair. The course will help you become proficient in diagnostic knee and shoulder arthroscopy procedures, and gain the skills base necessary for other procedures including partial meniscectomy, meniscus repair, subacromial decompression, and biceps tenotomy.

AAHKS Resident Mentoring Program
The AAHKS membership committee with the help of Dr. Jay Lieberman, Education Committee liaison, has developed a Resident Mentorship Program. It is designed to place a resident in contact with an AAHKS Fellow Member who would be available as a resource for a variety of reasons. The intention of this program is not to replace a resident’s mentor within his or her program, but this program should be seen as an additional resource for residents. We are looking for Resident Members or Resident Non-members wishing to become Resident members, to participate in the Mentoring Program. For additional information, or if you are interested in becoming a mentee, please contact Krista Stewart, Membership and Coding Specialist by email or 847-384-4376.

Practice Tips
By Timothy J. Birney, MD; and Frederic Platt, MD
Patient A.B. has “never been the same” since her auto accident 9 years ago. While stopped at a red light, her SUV was hit from behind by a slow-moving small car. Although the SUV was equipped with high seat backs, Ms. A.B. was wearing her seat belt, and neither vehicle sustained significant damage, she has suffered from neck and thoracic spine pain ever since the accident. The constant pain, she said, is exacerbated by movement and prolonged sitting. Read the complete article in AAOS Now.
