HOT TOPIC: What is a “Practice Evaluation Inventory”?
If you plan to look for a job that provides long-term satisfaction, you will need more than the right connections or good luck. You need to have a strategy that takes into account your personal and professional needs and values – and those of the significant others in your life. Knowing what you and the important people in your life want and need to be successful AND happy, allows you to focus your efforts on only those opportunities that best suit you. Ultimately, you will save time and stress by having a clear framework to identify which practice will be the right fit. To access the Practice Evaluation Inventory, log in with your ID.
If your residency program participates in the AAOS Resident Practice Management Lecture Series at the site on the OrthoPortal you will find a 90 minute recorded webinar entitled, "It's Not 'How to Find a Job!' - It's 'How to Find a Life!” This is a very helpful program designed to help you sort out the issues of joining a practice and helps you avoid making a poor choice.
For more resources on orthopaedic practice setting options and more, see the Practice Management Center’s Practice Transitions section.

The money is gone, but if your program is still interested in doing a journal club, the materials (recommended reading) are available. Contact Mary Ann Porucznik, managing editor of AAOS Now, at porucznik@aaos.org for the reading list/document links.
The July issue of AAOS Now included several articles of interest to residents, including the following:

Orthopaedic Research Society (ORS) Annual Meeting/Abstract Submissions
The ORS Annual Meeting is a unique environment that fosters collaboration amongst disciplines and exposure to different research methodologies. There is no other international meeting that combines transitional musculoskeletal biology, engineering, and clinical research.
In many institutions there is a gap between basic scientists and clinicians. The ORS Annual Meeting bridges these basic science and clinical gaps by creating a network where clinicians and basic scientists can easily collaborate. Whether it's during a workshop, spotlight session, or one of our many networking events you are sure to meet someone whose area of expertise compliments your own.
The ORS 2013 Annual Meeting will take place January 26-29 in San Antonio, Texas. Registration opens on Tuesday, September 4th. Please visit the ORS site for more information.
The ORS is currently accepting abstract submissions until August 6th. To read more about the ORS Annual Meeting from Richard L. Lieber, Ph.D., Professor and Vice Chair, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, University of California and V.A. Medical Centers, San Diego, visit out web site.

Texting Speeds Communication but Could Put You at Risk
By Andrew A. Brooks, MD
I’m often amazed at how little healthcare communication has changed in the nearly 25 years since I was a medical student. The last great innovation was the introduction of the pager.
In most hospitals, the communication process among physicians is arcane, inefficient, and potentially dangerous as it relates to patient care. According to The Joint Commission, a breakdown in communications could be tied to more than 60 percent of all reported sentinel events in 2011. Click here to continue reading.
