Specialty in the Spotlight: SOMOS
Society of Military Orthopaedic Surgeons
Email: info@somos.org
Website: www.somos.org
Summary of Society:
The purpose of the Society of Military Orthopaedic Surgeons (SOMOS) is to provide a forum for the interchange of medical knowledge as it relates to the practice of Orthopaedic surgery in the military. SOMOS holds one general meeting each year. The scientific meeting provides a forum for the presentation of research papers in a collegial setting, wherein SOMOS members may seek critical and constructive analysis of their observations, conclusions, and recommendations. The annual meeting also provides numerous opportunities for SOMOS members to meet in an informal setting to establish or renew acquaintances, share recent experiences, and solve common problems. Previous conferences have generated over 300 in attendance.
Mission/Purpose:
To provide a forum for the interchange of medical knowledge as it relates to the practice of Orthopaedic surgery in the military.
Resident Education Opportunities:
The SOMOS Annual meeting is typically held during the 2nd week of December.
Extremity War Injury symposium: SOMOS, in conjunction with the AAOS and OTA, continues to showcase the best military and civilian trauma research and serves to define current knowledge regarding management of extremity war injuries for the NIH, Congress, DOD, surgeons, researchers, and other relevant government agencies.
Mentoring Opportunities:
Established in 2011, the CDR Michael Mazurek Clinician Scholar Award will be presented annually
to a SOMOS member who has demonstrated the potential and desire to become
an orthopaedic clinician scholar. This award will recognize the individual who best exemplifies CDR Mazurek's commitment to excellence in military orthopaedic education
and research. This award includes travel and expenses to participate in the 1.5 day AAOS/OREF/ORS Clinician Scholar Development Program (CSDP) as well as travel and expenses to attend the SOMOS annual meeting in December 2013. Nominations for the 2013 Clinician Scholar Award are now being accepted at www.somos.org. Nominations close March 10, 2013.
Publications/Newsletter:
SOMOS publishes a semi-annual newsletter with useful information for its members. Several peer-reviewed journals have published special editions featuring SOMOS authors and their contributions.
Over 3 years ago, DT MedSurg, LLC (a Data Trace company), with educational support provided by Stryker, launched a new initiative, The Disaster Preparedness and Trauma Care Toolbox, featuring the Society of Military Orthopaedic Surgeons (SOMOS). The Disaster Preparedness and Trauma Care Toolbox is an educational conduit offering resources, such as special issues of the Journal of Surgical Orthopaedic Advances, Orthopaedics in Motion newsletters, the Disaster-Rx Blog, and the Disaster Preparedness Toolbox tab on the online textbook, Wheeless’ Textbook of Orthopaedics, to help educate non-military orthopaedic surgeons world-wide in the areas of disaster preparedness and trauma care. The Toolbox brings together the combined experience and knowledge of the SOMOS membership in the care of the combat wounded as it applies to humanitarian assistance and disaster relief.
