Mentoring Opportunities:
On-site mentoring is available at the IPOS meeting in Orlando. Interested residents are paired with an IPOS faculty member throughout the four day course. Did you Know This about the AAOS?
Orthopaedic Residents:  The Time is NOW
Follow the lead of Communications Cabinet resident member, Dr. Michael Bates and submit your Surgeon Story to our A Nation in Motion ®campaign.
Dr. Bates is an orthopaedic resident at the Carolinas Medical Center  and recently shared his Surgeon Story on anationinmotion.org.
As we continue to spread the word about the value of orthopaedic care, our new Surgeon Stories feature will amplify our campaign as it offers a look into the lives of orthopaedic surgeons. Surgeon Stories help to uncover the dedicated, compassionate and interesting individuals which orthopaedic surgeons are, even when they aren’t at work.
Please submit your Surgeon Story as it also is an opportunity to promote your place of practice. You can include a link to your hospital, practice or any website you choose. Click here to get started.
Also, consider submitting an Ortho-pinion for this campaign. These are bone and joint health columns authored by orthopaedic surgeons and can be about any musculoskeletal health topic that comes up on a daily basis with your patients. Click here for more details or to read our complete editorial guidelines.
Finally, we challenge you to take this one step further and SHARE this information with other orthopaedic surgeons with whom you may work with.

Dr. Michael Bates
Carolinas Medical Center
Charlotte, North Carolina
I became an orthopaedic surgeon because...
I became an orthopaedic surgeon because of the tremendous impact orthopaedic surgeons have on patients' quality of life. The field allows me to care for newborn patients all the way up to the most senior of our population. I've always enjoyed the technical challenges of orthopaedic surgery and the thought that goes into planning each surgery for each patient. No two days are quite the same for sure!
What is the most rewarding part of being an orthopaedic surgeon?
I'd have to say that the most rewarding part is talking to my patients after their surgery--when they're back on their feet and back to doing the things they love. There are many things, simple things, that we take for granted until we are unable to do them anymore. These may be things like walking without pain, or picking up a grandchild, or even a child with cerebral palsy not being able to ambulate as well. Being able to help people overcome these obstacles and see them improve is a huge part of my motivation.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I love the outdoors and love enjoying them on my mountain bike. Very peaceful to be able to get away and work out as well. I also enjoy photography. There are days where I'll just take my camera and photograph anything that interests me.
