AAOS/NIH Research Symposia: Osteolysis and Implant Wear: Biological, Biomedical Engineering and Surgical Principles

• Participants: Orthopaedic surgeons, Young Investigators, researchers, industry representatives, and other medical specialties (by invitation only).
• Purpose of Workshop: Wear of total joint replacements and the subsequent effects of wear debris currently remain the most important problems in joint replacement surgery. Revision procedures are technically more difficult than primary procedures, have a higher complication rate, a less predictable clinical outcome and are more costly. The surgery is often accompanied by significant bone loss, necessitating the use of extensive bone grafting and special prosthetic devices. Knowledge of the basic clinical, biological, design, and material principles relevant to prosthetic wear is necessary to prevent, diagnose and treat patients with wear-associated problems.

• Differences among gender, race, and ethnicity in regard to these questions
