AAOS Formal Process for Reviewing External Clinical Practice Guidelines for Endorsement

The AAOS has been developing evidence-based clinical practice guidelines to improve patient care. The Academy has received reorganization for these efforts, and consequently has received request by other medical specialty societies to review and possibly endorses their guidelines. The AAOS has developed a formal process for doing so.

Submitting an External Clinical Practice Guideline for AAOS Endorsement

Any organization seeking endorsement must first submit its request to one of the following:

• A member of the AAOS Board of Directors
• The Chair of the AAOS Advocacy Committee
• The Chair of the AAOS Council on Research Quality Assessment & Technology
• Chair of the AAOS Education Committee

Initial Criteria Review

An external organization seeking endorsement must fulfill the following initial criteria:

• The guideline must be based on systemically reviewed evidence
• The guideline must be less then 5 years old
• There must be a description of the funding source used for the development of the guideline
• There must be a statement of conflict of interest
• The external organization must submit a complete copy of the guideline including the supporting evidence tables
