American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM)
Members of the AAOS Biological Implants and Biomedical Engineering Committees have long been active in the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). For more than 100 years, ASTM has been developing standards to guide the design and manufacturing of a vast array of products. Committee F04 on Medical and Surgical Materials and Devices was formed in 1962 and currently houses subcommittees creating and updating standards on subject areas from polymeric materials to spinal devices to tissue engineered medical products (TEMPs). AAOS participation in ASTM has spurred the development of standards that streamline the regulatory pathway for orthopaedic products, helping to make novel solutions to complex orthopaedic problems available to our members and their patients.
