AAOS Welcomes the Republic of Korea as 2019 Guest Nation

The Republic of Korea will be honored as the Guest Nation during the AAOS 2019 Annual Meeting in Las Vegas March 12–16. Represented by the Korean Orthopaedic Association (KOA), Won Yong Shon, MD, PhD, KOA president, will lead the delegation.

Established in 1956 with just nine physicians, KOA currently has a thriving membership of more than 8,000. Uniting 24 subspecialty societies, it is one of the largest medical associations in the Republic of Korea.

KOA supports the orthopaedic profession and patient health through multiple educational avenues. It hosts two annual Congresses in April and October and holds several courses and meetings throughout the year. KOA recently expanded its international collaborations at its meetings to foster greater exchange for the benefit of research and clinical practice.

Dedicated to advancing the science of orthopaedics, KOA publishes two journals. The more than 50-year-old bimonthly Journal of the Korean Orthopaedic Association is the official Korean language journal of the KOA, Korean Bone and Joint Tumor Society, Korean Musculoskeletal Transplantation Society, and Korean Orthopedic Ultrasound Society. KOA also publishes an official English language journal, Clinics in Orthopedic Surgery, four times a year.

“The AAOS Annual Meeting has long benefited from Korean scholarship and expertise, as we regularly welcome contributors from the Republic of Korea,” said Guido Marra, MD, chair of the AAOS International Committee. “Now, with the Korean participation in the Guest Nation program, we have an opportunity to learn even more from our colleagues on a wide variety of topics. Much of the Guest Nation programming features collaboration with our U.S.-based members. These opportunities for exchange and learning from diverse perspectives are what strengthen our profession globally.”
