With the patient supine, inspect the bottom of the foot for plantar warts, which usually do not occur beneath the metatarsal head; a plantar callus, which occurs beneath the metatarsal head; prominence of the metatarsal heads; ulceration (especially in diabetic feet); or a thin fat pad.
