Robotic Assisted Total Knee Arthroplasty: Technological Innovation to Achieve Accurate Gap Balancing and Alignment

This video demonstrates robot-assisted total knee arthroplasty (TKA), which allows TKA to be performed without the use of jigs, cutting guides, or intramedullary instruments; uses live, three-dimensional preoperative planning software to maneuver the femoral and tibial components in the coronal, axial, and sagittal planes, which aids in achieving desired limb alignment before bone cuts are made; and aids in achieving balanced medial and lateral flexion and extension gaps (within 1 mm) to improve overall outcomes. The video presents the case study of a patient who underwent robot-assisted TKA to demonstrate the advantage of this technology in providing real-time intraoperative information, showing how virtual maneuvering of components helps minimize instability and malalignment and achieve desired goals.
