Active Fellow Membership

Class of 2020 Applications Now Open!

We are pleased to have you to join the AAOS.  Active Fellow Membership is available to orthopaedic surgeons practicing in the U.S. or Canada who are certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS).

As an Active Fellow Member, you can:

  • Expand your knowledge and skills with renowned educational resources, including Orthopaedic Knowledge Update (OKU), self-assessment examinations, clinical guidelines, and digital offerings.
  • Learn from the best minds and practitioners in orthopaedic medicine through our globally-valued publications and videos, including Journal of the AAOS (JAAOS), Orthopaedic Knowledge Online Journal (OKOJ), Orthopaedic Video Theater (OVT), and webinars.
  • Experience fellowship and support by connecting with other AAOS members in the U.S. and around the world, especially by attending the AAOS Annual Meeting.

Requirements: Certification by the ABOS. In exclusive practice of orthopaedic surgery in the U.S. or Canada for at least 36 months (exclusive of fellowship training) immediately prior to induction. Maintenance of a full, unrestricted, and unlimited license to practice medicine or full-time service in the federal government. Compliance with the AAOS Standards of Professionalism.

Recruitment period: Annually from October through April the following year.

Dues & Membership Cycle: A one-time mandatory initiation fee billed in October upon acceptance.  2019 Active Fellow dues are $995.  The annual dues cycle dates are January 1st through December 31st. Active Fellow membership is a continuous membership and dues are automatically billed in October for the upcoming membership cycle.

Application process: Completion and submittal of the Active Fellow Membership application during the recruitment period. All applications are reviewed by the Membership Committee and Active Fellow status is considered pending until final approval by the AAOS Board of Directors. Applicants are approved and accepted as a “class” each year in October. The full application process can take 10-12 months.
